Resignation date question

Silvercrayon · 15/03/2021 19:36

I am resigning my teaching post this week.
I would like to put 31st August as date to officially leave so I get paid in August.

However, I’m weirdly worried I will get ask to do extra duties such as summer scheme etc (our school does this)

What do I do? Put leaving day 21st July and not get paid for August or hold out for 31st August and get paid.

Please help!

Put the 31st August and say "I have other commitments" when asked about summer schemes.

Silvercrayon · 15/03/2021 22:06

We don’t usually have to work them. I just don’t trust how petty she may be.

You can only be asked to do your directed hours as a teacher?
I thought the resignation leaving dates were set as 31st August anyway. Just speak to your union if there is any silliness!

You’re not paid for August, you’re paid in August so put 31st August as resignation date and ignore any summer scheme requests - it’s not within you contracted dates.

Teacher’s contracts end on 31st August anyway, if you leave at the end of the academic year. You can’t be asked to do any additional work in the summer holidays. It’s against the teachers’ terms and conditions.

Can I hijack please?
I have no idea how to write a resignation letter but also want to give my notice before the Easter holidays. What should I put in the letter? Obviously I can't say what I really want to. Wink

Have you got something lined up, @Silvercrayon? I've decided to take the plunge so that I am free to apply for other jobs, teaching or otherwise, but it's a scary leap.

You just need to inform them that you will be resigning with effect from whatever date. It would be good practice to sign off with a sentence that acknowledges something positive about the school and your time there, and perhaps thank for support you’ve been given (if that’s the case?).

Yes, just resign as if 31 August.
Always good to say something positive about the school you’re leaving and the people. You might need a reference at some point.

Later next term if they ask you to take on holiday work, simply say you won’t be available. Dont mention anything about it unless it comes up. They won’t actually be expecting you to be the one coming in. I. Teaching it is very much expected that your last day in school is the last end of term unless you choose to come in. You might go in on exam results day or something similar if in senior management or dept head, it actually you’ve usually moved onto thinking g about your new role by then and might well be at those kind of events for your new school.

When people take on a new job, they always prepare and expect to work unpaid beforehand in the summer before starting. You’d expect to visit your classroom in primary and set it up etc. You’d do some planning. Same is true in secondary. It’s just that your okd school keeps paying you until 31 Aug, but they essentially know you’re not available to them after July.

Where this could again be different, might be as a Head of Year finishing off an exam year group....you might feel a strong desire to see them get their results and head off etc. It would be your choice though.

Perhaps you’ll have moved out of the area by then......
