'Above the national scale' - private school pay

If a school says they pay 'above the national scale' - can anyone give me an idea of what that might mean? How much above? I'd like to go into salary negotiations with an idea of what to expect. Thank you!

Depends on the type of school. I used to in a non-selective, local day school that isn't well known. On the mainscale they payed 2% more than the published salaries for state school teachers.
I have a couple of friends working at large, well-known independent schools that charge astronomical fees and generally have boarding. They get paid significantly more, and they seemed to be in a position to negotiate based on their experiences both teaching and non-teaching. In these schools though, they do a VERY long day and in term time the school has their blood really (often including weekend duties), so it is appropriate that they are paid a bit more.
