Applying for NQT roles public/private?

Would you recommend the public schools or private for NQT roles. I attended a private school but I know it was rife with snobbery and I wonder if that transcends into staff morale? Thoughts

I thought public schools were private?
It might be difficult to complete your NQT year in a private school, you have to be registered with the local authority and have additional non contact time, I understand many private schools can't or won't facilitate this.

No problem doing your NQT in a private/public school. My school uses ISTIP as NQT training provider? All the infrastructure to support you is there.

Lots of pros and cons and a lot depends on you and what you want. I work at a boarding school and love being involved in all aspects, really thrown into pastoral care in the boarding house, sports, etc... it really is a lifestyle job where you work 6 days a week (or sometimes 7 if you get a Sunday duty)

Some of the younger members of staff have found this a bit too enclosing, especially if they live on site, there isn’t much time let to have a social life.

As an NQT you should look at the whole package, pension, accommodation and work load. Classes might be smaller and there might be less teaching hours but don’t let that fool you that you will be working less hours, just different things.

Perfectly possible and if you want a career in the independent sector, I would head straight there. However, if you want to be able to move back and forth between state and non-maintained, I would seriously consider doing a few years in state first. As PP has proven, the state sector views the independent sector with suspicion. If you start in an independent school, some state schools will think you wouldn't cope with a wild bottom set of 35 kids on a wet Friday afternoon, and they might be right. My DH sometimes mentions boys with dreadful behaviour. Turns out they might have rolled their eyes at him when asked to get out their Surface Pro to take notes...

Accommodation for all staff is now vanishingly rare and often only available to staff with a heavy pastoral commitment due to tax changes. However, it is worth looking for as it's an amazing perk.

You can do NQT in an independent school
I think if you want to keep options open starting in a state school and moving to private is easier than the other way round in the early stages of your career

As others have already said, it is entirely possible to do your NQT year in a private school. I have a couple of friends who started in state and then went into private schools and they have been very happy.

I would consider whether you may want to change between sectors though. If you do, I would advise working in state schools for a couple of years first. I know some people who have moved from private to state and found it exceedingly difficult. Not to say everyone will, but they did.

Some state schools would also be wary of employing someone who had been in private for a long time/done NQT in private.
