Do you find out if you’re not shortlisted?

If you apply for a teaching job and you’re not successful in being shortlisted for interview, are you informed? Or is it common to hear nothing back?

I’ve applied for a job, the closing date is today and they said in the advert that interviews are expected to be scheduled for this week. Hoping to hear something soon!

It varies school to school but most don't let you know if you're not short listed Sad

If you are short listed and interviews are this week you will most likely hear tomorrow I would think.

Good luck!

TheJackieWeaver · 09/02/2021 23:04

Unfortunately, most don’t let you know. The schools I’ve worked in tend to telephone those who are shortlisted within 48 hours of the deadline then follow up with a letter with more information about the interview.

If you are talking international, or private, you might not hear anything at all, ever after you put your application in.
Some shocking recruitment out there.
Think of it as probably a good thing for you to be honest.
Good schools will always acknowledge your application and let you know either way.

watingroom2 · 11/02/2021 12:38

I have an application in..

The deadline was the 8th

They said interviews week beginning 22nd

I had hoped I may still get a letter though the post - but the 'they phone you' comment has made me loose hope

(I have never had a phone call for a job interview before.. but it has made anxious)

ilikepi · 11/02/2021 15:50

DH assumed he wasn’t shortlisted for a job but received a request for interview a week after the closing date. They didn’t even bother acknowledging his application. The only info they sent prior to interview was a Zoom link and that only at 10pm the day before the interview! There really is some shocking recruitment practices at some schools.

Popsicales · 11/02/2021 16:44

I’ve not heard back yet so I’m not holding out much hope. But I’ve applied to another position.

I think it’s still early for primary jobs for September isn’t it? There aren’t many advertised at all.

I think its the start - the people who fill these jobs - will create new jobs who will in turn create new ones..

But I hate the limbo - and had hoped for 'an either way response' because at least it does not leave you hanging (In an era of emails you would not think it that tricky - but I guess if there are lots of applicants.. meh!)

I'll keep my fingers crossed that no news is good news..

MrsZola · 11/02/2021 18:47

I've always been informed if I haven't been shortlisted - but sometimes really late, up to the day before interviews. I'd assumed I hadn't made the shortlist for those ones.

Popsicales · 11/02/2021 18:47

@watingroom2 thank you, good luck to you too! I hate hanging on. Are you applying for your first NQT job too?

What does everyone think of jobs that are advertised as ‘initially a fixed term contract for a year’? Ok for an NQT?

OP posts:
watingroom2 · 11/02/2021 23:43

When I was an NQT I got a job through supply - and then eventually was made permanent.. but that was moons ago - I didn't do an NQT year.. I think '1 year posts' often become longer - if you are good at your job... It's a safe way of trying someone out without committing..

I'm now at the 'expensive' end of the pay scale and suspect strongly that I cost too much to employ...

The job was open to all pay ranges.. but I can't help but think the money will come into play somewhere along the line!

Keep me posted how you get on @popsicales - i'm sure there is a job out there for you!

ellesbellesxxx · 13/02/2021 08:19

Mostly IME you don’t hear anything. However on one occasion I had an email where it just said “see attachment.”
The attachment was called “rejection” I don’t think I bothered opening it Grin

Definately too early for Sept. Those jobs come out earliest easter and usually at the June half term... There's one or two at this point but not many

I'm a teacher but I used to work in recruitment many years ago... Way way way too early for Sept don't panic!

Malbecfan · 13/02/2021 10:22

The one year thing is, as a previous poster said, a way of "try before you buy". It works both ways - if the teacher is good and fits in well with the ethos of the school, great.

The final date for handing in your notice to leave at the end of the academic year is a way off yet. It's 31st May. Obviously if someone is retiring, has been promoted or knows they are moving on, jobs will be available now. Mostly in primary schools it seems to be after Easter. In secondary schools, it is often earlier. My own school is advertising 4 jobs now, all of which are due to the school expanding. I have no idea yet if anyone is moving on or retiring in the summer; if things don't change a lot, one of those could be me!
