Do I line manage outside my own subject?

I have been asked if I would lead a subject outside my current department and expertise. I am worried if I line manage outside my department I may turn into a jack of all trades master of none, and I am unsure whether I would do the job justice. I know that if i want to be an assistant head I will need to line manage outside my subject but I don't know whether I should lead my own subject first or just go for it. It is obviously more money, more responsibility which is great though.

Spend time getting to know the subject. I'm line managed by a non maths teacher and hate it because every feedback is not specific to the subject. The person also doesn't understand assessment in maths either.

Is it radically different, eg maths and drama? Or more like history and sociology?

I would urge caution if this is your first subject lead position. Why would you manage a subject out of your expertise? How much do you know about this subject? Why is there nobody else to do this?

What is the subject like? In disarray? Is there a strong deputy you could lean on? Would staff accept your leadership?
