NQT-Not sure what to do next year

I’m currently an NQT covering maternity in EYFS. I enjoy my job but I’m not going to lie it has been tough with all the back and forth online learning coupled with home learning my own children. I came into teaching a bit late in the game as I had a career break and was really looking forward to working full time etc. However, the shittiness of this year has made me reassess my plans for next year and consider part-time or supply as an RQT.

Anyway, as I’m covering maternity I’m not sure if I will be offered a job come September. Should I somehow let the Head know that I would consider a part time position next year? Or is it too early to have a chat when I don’t know if there will even be a vacancy. Has anyone gone straight from NQT to part time? If so, how is it? I feel a bit sad about requesting part time but I’m exhausted. For context I’m 40 with 4 children.

Vacancies for September will increase after half term. So it’s perfectly reasonable to ask for a discussion in the next couple of weeks. There may be things in the pipeline they can’t confirm but if they know your plans they can factor it in, it could be the person you are covering is discussing only coming back part time which would be fairly simple.

Thanks I have been thinking about it all day and going back and forth. I do love my class and I don’t want to take a step backwards even financially because I have finally started earning again, but this year has been tough. I will bring it up and see what they say.

I agree with everything notdaddycool wrote, but in the same breath, PT positions are like gold dust
