Sending an email to the HT about applying elsewhere for an NQT role

First- can I apply to other schools and not tell my mentor? Or do I need to at least tell them

Second- if I were to send an email. Is the below example alright? I’ve only seen the HT online. We’ve not met in person. I feel rude asking but the application specifically only wants the current head to give a ref. He’s definitely running the place with an iron fist. No fools are suffered gladly by him.

“ Dear x,

I hope you are well. I’m one of the SCITT trainees on placement in the Science department. I will be applying for an NQT role. The application requires a reference from the headteacher of my current workplace.

Please could you let me know if you will be able to provide a reference.

Best wishes,

X’

Is that okay. Do I need to reword?

If you're a trainee, it's normal for the training provider to provide one and your subject mentor the other.

Applications will always ask for the current head.

As a trainee, schools expect you to be applying for jobs so please don't feel awkward. A polite email, as you have drafted above is fine. Normally, I woulf say ask in person but obviously that's not possible at the moment.

Why do you not want to tell your mentor? It's normal for him/her to write or at least contribute to a reference. Also, when I have mentored trainees, I have offered interview advice and support.

Do your school have a vacancy but you don't want to apply? If so and anyone asks, you can just say that you understand there are no guarantees and therefore you are keeping your options open.

Oh hang on, just re-read your post and thought - did you post about the head a few weeks back?

Doesn't change that it's still normal to ask for a reference/apply for a job. If you have issues, speak to your training provider.
