Unsuccessful at secondary Scitt interview- what to do now

Hi everyone,
Feel massively deflated. I put so much into the interview. I have 2 years experience volunteering in a secondary school as a TA.
I think the thing that let me down is that I have a psychology degree (1.1) not an English degree.

I knew it was a long shot- any ideas on what I can do now. Maybe I have avoided a bullet as I know its incredibly difficult for teachers right now....
Feel so sad though.

Was it down to subject knowledge?

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 26/01/2021 20:43

Are there any other providers?

What is their reason?

Silverlining37 · 26/01/2021 20:47

@MrsHamlet yes it was. They suggested I do an A'level in English (which I have) and to do a SKE (which I thought I could only do when I have my space on the scitt).

Can you go for one in Psychology and try to do some English teaching along the way?

Silverlining37 · 26/01/2021 20:50

@HercwasanEnemyofEducation

I have requested the full feedback that they offered.
I only applied to 1 scitt.

I feel like I need to find something else to do. I I don't want to do a Masters. I want to work.

Really grateful for any advice.

Hmmmm. You can't do SKE without a place so that's very odd (I used to run a SCITT)

Is there anywhere else nearby you'd consider?

Silverlining37 · 26/01/2021 21:00

@MrsHamlet
Thats what I thought. In the feedback they said would you consider doing an English A'Level or a SKE and I didnt understand what they meant....

I am happy to self fund the SKE as I know there is no funding....

Would the school you're in take you through a salaried route?

Did you say you were doing an A Level?
Is it too late to apply elsewhere?

Silverlining37 · 26/01/2021 21:22

Hi @HercwasanEnemyofEducation

No salaried route for English.

I do have an A'Level in English Lit. @

Would they make the offer conditional on SKE? We used to do that if necessary (although there was no English SKE at that point)

Fifthtimelucky · 27/01/2021 11:56

@dapsnotplimsolls

Can you go for one in Psychology and try to do some English teaching along the way?
This is what I'd suggest too. My daughter has a place at a SCITT to train as a psychology teacher next year (assuming she gets her degree in the summer, of course).

She thought about training as an English teacher (she has an A levels in English and drama and has been volunteering as an English tutor), but her love is psychology so went for that.

Many schools seem to expect psychology teachers to teach a second subject too, because they cannot justify a full time psychology teacher and my daughter expects that she will probably end up doing some English teaching at some point.

Good luck

What about a postgraduate teaching apprenticeship, op?

SeasonFinale · 27/01/2021 16:54

On the basis that they have suggested that you do an A level that you already have is there any appeal route? You would be able to then reaffirm that you have an English Lit A level.

Silverlining37 · 29/01/2021 12:42

@HercwasanEnemyofEducation- I am more philosophical now. I don't think I am suited to teach English- if I was they would have chosen me...

@MrsHamlet-
I have heard of people teaching with an A'Level and a SKE in absence of a degree but they havent made me that offer.
@SeasonFinale- its odd that they didnt know I have an A'Level. Surely thats why I was invited for interview. I clarified this post interview and I am waiting for feedback.

Thank you @dapsnotplimsolls and @Fifthtimelucky- I really had my heart set on English...I feel pasionate about getting young people reading, appreciating Shakespeare and giving them the English skills they will need post school. I bought books, I was really invested in teaching English Sad

@2ndMrsdeWinter- I didn't apply through UCAS. I applied directly to the scitt.

Thank you everyone for taking the time to post. I really appreciate it.

Don't give up to soon. You have only applied to one place. They may not have had many spaces and had better qualified candidates (eg ones with an English degree).

Through UCAS I think you can apply for 4, so it's worth having another go before you give up altogether. Ask for detailed feedback from the first interview and it might help you to improve for the next interview.

I’m going to suggest Educational Psychology as a career only because you have psychology degree and experience in schools.
