You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Do not give the staffroom password just in case it attracts the wrong sort

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation.

If you come with a stick to goad us then that is not allowed in the staffroom and you will receive a detention

I have a year 11 with a 1:1 TA. She is needed to scribe for him. At home, she supports remotely and types for him, which is the same as he gets in school - but we're getting daily emails about how he can't do x, y and z. He absolutely can but he likes to pretend he can't so that he doesn't have to. A lot of pandering goes on at home.
New teachers are often sucked in to the "poor Bob" line because the little sod does it so very well. He's had a temp TA for a while and she also fell for it.
I think he's brilliant but that drives me mad about him.

Monkeytennis97 · 24/01/2021 20:07

Listening to LBC, Rachel Johnson talking to Wilshaw.

Monkeytennis97 · 24/01/2021 20:19

He was actually errr ok, put the boot into the DfE a bit. Good.

noblegiraffe · 24/01/2021 20:27

My Y3 will absolutely not sit by herself and crack on with her work. We’re both in the kitchen and while she’s working the best I can hope to do is deal with emails and bits and pieces, not anything solid like planning a lesson. She’ll want to talk about what she’s doing, ask a spelling, check an answer, lose her pencil, constant reassurances and then announcing she’s finished and needing the next bit sorting/video to watch. I guess in school she’d be talking to the kid next to her. I’ve even said to her ‘you’re not like this in school’ and she agrees, but she’s not in school she’s stuck at home with me and it’s crap

EnemyOfEducationNo1 · 24/01/2021 20:31

I was leaving my yr5 and yr2 kids to get on with their work themselves, as any spare minute I had was spent wrangling the bloody minded yrR.
And then I discovered that the yr2 child was reading the instructions, going "yeah I could do that, too easy" and just clicking submit without actually doing any of it Hmm me doing a cursory check "oh good, all assignments clicked as completed" ...
Until I skived off a couple of my own lessons when youngest was having a bad day, and discovered how little work she as actually doing Grin
To be fair, it is very very easy work for her (hate to be a MN mum, but her reading, writing and maths are probably yr4 level. Comprehension is excellent) but that's not the point!

EnemyOfEducationNo1 · 24/01/2021 20:34

That didn't make sense but hopefully you get the gist. Trying to chivvy kids into bed as well as MN

CallmeAngelina · 24/01/2021 20:34

Yr 3 is one thing. I'm hearing it from parents of much older kids who are "fine" in school.
But yes, I do accept it's different at home. My own kids were fab in school, but ds "knew it all" and wouldn't be helped at home and dd used to go all pathetic and make out she didn't get things that I knew she did.
I got my mother (a teacher of many years) to give her some tutoring once, as I was wondering if there really was something I should be worrying about. After 30 mins, my mother emerged from the kitchen and said, "well, there's nothing wrong with that child's maths."

Am I the only one to be getting a bit irritated with all the parents who are saying they have to sit with their KS2+ kids all day giving 1:1 support

Out of my class of 30 Year 3s, only six of them do not have parents sit 1:1 with them during my two daily live sessions.

And when I say sit, I mean in full view of the camera, clearly talking over me to their offspring. Three or four parents then frequently send me ‘questions’ or ‘comments’ after the sessions (aka veiled criticism).

I am experienced and well respected in my school, yet this particular cohort of pushy parents are shooting my stress levels through the roof with this shite. The teacher who had them last year during lockdown nearly got signed off with stress because of the insane parental interference.

No wonder these parents aren’t doing their own jobs if they’re trying to do mine all the sodding time.

noblegiraffe · 24/01/2021 20:46

DD doesn’t have live lessons and I wouldn’t sit with her during them if she did!

But she won’t leave me alone when she is working.

Timeturnerplease · 24/01/2021 20:49

I know! I totally understand helping during the actual activity part/recorded lessons, but I’m RiIGHT THERE during live sessions.

Surely by KS2 you’d take that opportunity for a cup of tea and a break???

Monkeytennis97 · 24/01/2021 20:49

@Timeturnerplease that sounds very stressful! Makes me glad to be a secondary teacher.

Rachel Johnson just read my text out! You guys would have been proud.

noblegiraffe · 24/01/2021 20:49

Have you seen this story developing over the day? Teacher sets up online school for free live lessons because ‘shocked at state provision’ (his classes have 250 kids so live is a bit pointless as there’s no interaction).

Teacher petitions government for funding whinging that Oak is getting more money than him.

Gavin starts peddling the idea that live lessons are the best.

Gavin Williamson appears on the online school website as a sponsor/significant supporter.

Hmmm.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 24/01/2021 20:52

My child won't leave me alone. Period.

Had small meltdown today, and her constant presence was one of the issues. I only get time alone when I'm out walking. And I'm SO FUCKED OFF with walking. Am absolutely hating it.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 24/01/2021 20:55

Oh that dude is waiting to be an MP. Private Eye this week. It's another mates thing.

His monitor has a Classroom Secrets PowerPoint on it too, which is a bit rich considering the article is moaning about teachers not making own resources.

That would really get my goat. Deepest sympathies.

Noble - the worst thing is that another example of chumocracy is actually expected...

noblegiraffe · 24/01/2021 21:04

Interesting, Rule. Also interesting that Gav has not declared his significant interest/support in the MPs’ register.

How the fuck is a ‘live’ lesson for hundreds of kids a good thing? It is totally pandering to those who think live is best regardless of whether it actually means anything.

Appuskidu · 24/01/2021 21:08

Just saw this on Twitter.

Things are so wrong in this country

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 24/01/2021 21:11

It makes me so cross. Just stay pit of my profession, you're a fucking fireplace salesman, and you were in the army.

namechangedyetagain · 24/01/2021 21:12

Hats off to those of you teaching live online lessons. I don't know if I'd be able to manage that.

As it is I've spent the weekend doing not very much apart from thinking of the week ahead and am now coming out of a panic attack about having to go to school tomorrow. I don't know why.

I'm trying to stay away from my student chat group as I feel so inadequate. In a right panic about having to teach this week now. I know what's coming up, my teacher ok'd the lesson plans she asked for, a lot of the other stuff is Oak . Why am I in such a tizz?

EnemyOfEducationNo1 · 24/01/2021 21:16

Namechanged - it's ok, everything is fucking stressful at the moment. In a way live teaching is easier as I can wing it as if I was in class, except there is mute Grin

Piggywaspushed · 24/01/2021 21:20

So, hang on, this Invicta bunch are not Oak, no one has ever heard of them, supported by a bunch of Tories shoring up the Grammar School system and there's Gav and Halfon's mughsots? Gee whizz.

Halfon doesn't agree with Grammars allegedly.

TheHoneyBadger · 24/01/2021 21:21

Lol all the pressure we get for 90 shades of differentiation and afl throughout etc and suddenly preaching a lesson at 250 kids is a wonderful thing. Get to fuck gav.

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 24/01/2021 21:22

A live lesson for 100 kids may as well be a pre record for all the interaction they'll get.

Enemy I'm finding winging easier via teams. I did accidentally forget to mute and refer to someone (non school related) as a dick. Luckily it was sixth form and they laughed!

starrynight19 · 24/01/2021 21:23

Yes mute was a great help this week when a parent just decided to interrupt the lesson and start a conversation. I just said I couldn’t hear her and could she post in chat. Never got anything back.
So many of our parents sit in on the lesson but I think most are doing it in a supportive way.
