Teaching lessons from school (remote lessons) and my own child at home - primary age

i am a teacher and have 2 kids - 12 and 9 yo. My chn will have home learning from next week. I think 12 yo can stay by himself? but 9yo ...needs to be looked after. My husband can take some time off work to stay with kids at home. Can I ask my school to let me know 2 days stay at home and work from home, whilst keeping an eye on kids?
My school might ask me why my 9yo does not go to his school as a child of key worker, but his school is about 1 hour drive from our house and it woudl not be time-efficient.

How does he get to school usually?

pasok1000 · 01/01/2021 09:56

My primary age child boards on week days so then we do not have travelling issues...

Oh I see.
You can ask.... You will probably get a couple of days, but would assume if more, it would be unpaid.
Also depends how easy they could cover you with everything going on at the moment.

what if I say to work fromhome?

Are you secondary or primary /other?

Hercwasonasnowball · 01/01/2021 12:52

Could you not send them to board?

reefedsail · 01/01/2021 14:24

Herc presumably the child's school is in an area where they are closed. Independents have to close too.

I'd talk to your Head OP. If you work from home who will have the KW/V children in your class?

pasok1000 · 01/01/2021 14:52

Sorry what is KW/V ?

I don't think you can justify not using key worker provision at your child's school because it's inconvenient. My DC's school wouldn't include teachers in their KW provision and even that situation was difficult enough to manage.

You'll have to travel the hour to get them to school I think.

SaltyAF · 01/01/2021 15:42

NASUWT advice says you can try to make the case to WfH but I don't really think you have grounds in this instance.

minisoksmakehardwork · 01/01/2021 16:23

Schools here are asking teachers to come in in order to protect the teacher. They will do online teaching from their own classroom with the vulnerable/key worker students moving to their timetabled classes.

I assume it's an independent school otherwise I'd suggest contacting your council to see what other provision is available more locally.

If they're a weekly boarder, is that facility not still available to keyworker families? Primary schools are being told they should be providing normal school and wraparound care, which boarding would be.

reefedsail · 01/01/2021 17:10

KW/V= key worker & vulnerable.

My DS's prep didn't accept teachers' children during the previous school closure as most teachers were mostly WFH. They definitely did not continue to offer boarding.

pasok1000 · 01/01/2021 17:52

could I ask that if I do not tach in th morning at 8.30 am, to come later that day - 9.00 so that I can share the childcare with my husband, I care till 9.00, he cares for them after 9.00?

My school would just say bring my kids in with me to the KW provision there! Would your school let your child come with you?
