Teacher presents for Christmas

Hello all. I just wanted to get people's thoughts on this.
We have a child in nursery (on 30 hours free) and one in school. For xmas I have bought 6 boxes of chocolates for the teachers across the 2 settings. Each box cost £1.50.
Me and my husband have had a BIG row about it as he says we should be spending any extra money on our mortgage.
We are comfortable and not struggling to pay our monthly amount. We over pay each month.
I thought it was a toekn gesture ture to say thank you. My husband says they haven't been open for 6 months of the year due to covid so why should we get them anything.
I feel it is ridiculous when they're all working through covid (yes they did close in lockdown 1).
It's caused such a big argument as I called him a scrooge, and basically told him it's unattractive.
Am I being totally silly to buy this gift or is he being silly getting so upset by it?

He is being silly and a bit of a dick using the closed for 6 months line. I worked most days through March - July

However i never expect a gift but always appreciate the ones I get ❤️ Your gift will be very appreciated

I am touched by any gift; cost is irrelevant. That someone cares enough to say thank you makes me feel warm and appreciated. Teachers don't always feel appreciated. I worked my full hours in lockdown, and was happy to.
Thank you for caring and ignore your husband. Your children will also get pleasure from gifting and it's a lovely life lesson for them.

It sounds like maybe something else is bothering him and he's spent too long reading the sun or the daily mail. Maybe wait till he calms down and just say sorry I really didn't think it would bother you. Is everything ok? The prospect of the country being in complete financial ruin looms over a lot of people at the moment.
Things are hard for everyone emotionally and maybe he just doesn't know how to tell you.
I sent 6 bottles of wine to a specific department at my DDs school as they've been so amazing. Our school have slaved since March, I wish I had the money to buy a bottle for each staff tbh.

Thank you all. All calm now and it's definitely an issue with spending any of our money on the gifts.
I think the kids will get great pleasure being able to give a gift like you say so that's the important thing. Thank you all x
