Pgce interviews

Hi all,

I have some interviews for primary pgce. My first one is on Monday. I need to prepare a 15 maths lesson to deliver on zoom for 6 LKS2 children (posed by interviewers because of the virus).

The fly in the ointment is that I have only worked in KS1. Everybody at school are too busy to help me within the time constraint of it being on Monday.

Can anyone give me any topics and ideas I could do and any tips for doing it to adults on zoom rather than children in the classroom and also tips for the interview please?

Thank you

I suggest they will ask how you thought the lesson went and if you correctly identified any development needs.
Look at some of the maths books for L.M & H performing children See what they are working on presently. Have a lesson read to extend if needed.
Think about how they are going to answer the questions and give them some actions to learn to keep them occupied.

The fact you've worked in a school is more than other applicants so don't worry about having only done KS1.

I've been involved in observing PGCE/ITT selection lessons and we are never looking for a perfect lesson. We are looking for evidence that the candidate can relate to the students, can communicate well, has done their research and has thought about their tasks. It's about seeing if the candidate has potential.

During the selection processes I've been involved in the biggest negatives that would emerge in our discussions were poor command of English (not having a regional accent btw, but bad at communicating and loads of non-standard grammar) and choosing tasks/topics that were nowhere close to the age given as that could easily have been established by looking at the national curriculum online.

Have a look at the LKS2 curriculum and pick a topic that interests you. When you plan your lesson, keep the content manageable in the time and don't try to do too much. Depending on how much experience you have, it could be useful to think about how you'd support those who are struggling and have an extension task on your plan. You wouldn't use the extension task, but it shows the interviewer that you've considered it.

The interview usually asks about why you want to teach/what makes a good teacher, a question about your lesson and how you think it went, for secondary we also tend to have a subject based question but primary might ask you something about topics or areas of interest.

I'm happy for you to message me if it would help.
