Are teachers entitled to a paid transition day when moving school?

Hi, I was wondering if anybody could clarify if you're entitled to a day out to visit your new school? I'm moving in in January and have been invited to go to my new school for the day which I'd really like to do but always hate asking for time out! Thanks.

You aren't entitled to one but many heads agree between themselves that this is ok- or used to. The difference now is that you are spending the day in one school and returning to your own, not the best thing to be doing under the current circumstances. Your head may therefore be reluctant to agree. You would need to ask.

Thanks for the reply. I'll ask tomorrow and see what happens.

No entitlement but most head’s do agree. New school may offer to pay for supply as a courtesy. However, as pp said, probably not a good idea at the moment, in lockdown.

Thanks, it's not until after lockdown, so hopefully I might be ok by then. If lockdown actually ends!

Every time I've moved schools, the new head has paid the supply cover for me to visit. One school even paid for a full week of cover and my accommodation in a local B&B, as my new school was 120 miles away (I was moving for the job).

In this Covid era though, as PP have said, it might not be agreed. However, if you are starting in January, you could ask to finish a day early (with supply paid by your new school) and do the visit on that last day. Not ideal of course, being Christmas, but a solution 👍

@GriseldaChop it's not to do with lockdown. It's because you should not be going into different school bubbles and then crossing back into your own.
