Can I apply for a Senco role without any experience?

I have been teaching in a primary school for 6 years. Do you think I could do the job without any prior experience of being a SENCo?
Thanks.

Secondary here. Our senco was new last year and has no prior experience. She's doing the qualification alongside the role - but we've retained our previous senco as a part time consultant.

If you are an experienced teacher I would exect you have had some in class experience you can draw on. I have never been a senco bu have worked with adults and children with additional needs both on voluntary and paid level.

Yes. It’s a tough job though. My previous manager was a very experienced SENco and she was amazing.

Thank you. I wonder if they’d pay for me to gain the senco qualification or whether I’d have to pay myself?

Are they asking for a specific senco qualification?

Callardandbowser · 02/11/2020 19:55

No they’ve just advertised for a Senco role which I’m very interested in.
I have nothing to lose by applying I suppose. I just don’t want to seem silly for applying without any experience.
I have plenty of experience of helping children to overcome their learning barriers and supporting SEN.
I also worked in a special needs school for a long placement when I was at university.
I think I’m just going to go for it.

Usually schools pay for you to do it. It’s about £1800 otherwise. It’s a brilliant job!

Thank you!
I will organise a visit to the school tomorrow to get a feel for it!

I got a new job as SenCo and they paid for me to train. It was a few years ago now, but I really enjoyed the training and the job.
Good luck!

Wow, I hope I get it! Thanks all.
