Primary, year 1. I'm taking over the class at half term due to the current teacher going on maternity leave. Any good tips for keeping a tidy desk, organising paper, bits etc? Or organisation in general? Thanks

Throw out any paper you don't need at the end of every day. Think about where you will put print outs you are waiting to use, either in drawers or laid out in piles on a table. Devote plenty of time to getting the children to tidy. Have an ongoing to do list and make little lists for what you need to achieve after school each day.

Buy a set of cheap plastic drawers, label them Monday, Tuesday etc then all copying of resources, lesson plans goes straight into the relevant drawers.

Have sets of tick lists for the class ready so you can easily grab one and tick off e.g. Who's read to you, who is on what book band, who's brought back reply slips etc

Will try and think of more

Make tidy up time a timetabled point at the end of the day-play a particular song and everyone has to pick up bits off the floor, recycle scrap etc.
Keep water bottles in supermarket wine carrier bags/ boxes then they don't all keep falling over and you can grab the bags and take them outside when you need to

Chuck out everything at the end of the day. No build up of paperwork anywhere. That's key.

Did this yesterday! I'm aiming for forward thinking and organisation!

Marie Kondo it and get rid of absolutely everything they are not directly learning from.

Have you got a teacher cupboard? I'd definitely spend some time having a massive and brutal declutter in that so you have room to keep all their exercise books etc in it. If they still have toys, keep them in there too in bins.

There isn't actually a cupboard in the room--probably a good thing as I won't be able to hoard stuff. The current teacher has resources organised in drawers etc. Books are in heavy duty magazine files. She has kept all the display lettering from last year which is great.

Get a planner and write down key events for the week/to do's/name of parents you need to speak to at the end of the day, etc. Your day's so manic it will really help you to remember everything.
