I’ve been asked to teach GCSE Spanish, where do I start?

I work for a small Key Stage 4 alternative provision. I speak fluent Spanish but I’m not qualified to teach it. I’ve been asked to teach the gcse to 2 year 11s who are complete beginners.
There is no high expectation, a 1 or a 2 would be seen as a success for these students, but in at a loss as to where to start.
There is Some budget available, I don’t know whether to buy the AQA Spanish text book and kerboodle (expensive option) or buy a KS3 package such as Mira! with audio CDs (almost same price as kerboodle!)

Could anyone advise me what resources I would need to get these two yr11 complete beginners up to gcse standard with one double lesson a week 😬 a complete package would be ideal as I have no previous lessons/scheme of work to use!

Mira is pretty outdated now. We use Kerboodle and it is very much a complete package for GCSE . However, there is really an assumption there has been some study at KS3 - Claro is the textbook they peddle for KS3. Have a word with your Kerboodle rep - I know we got a huge discount for being a small school so see what they can do for you. AQA have broad schemes of work on their website so start there, have a read of the spec and see what you need to get them to do. Plenty of people have put vocab into the likes of Quizlet and Memrise they can do on their phones.

I think getting students in year 11 to a place where they could tackle a foundation exam is unrealistic in the extreme, unless there is prior learning, evidence Of linguistic ability or they have spent some time in Spain (not uncommon).

I also think it is a bonkers idea to start now...
I think you could get away with buying the Gianfranco Conti sentence builder book, I think there is a listening book that goes with it. If you have a bit more budget get access to The Language Gym.
Kate Languages has fab resources as do the exam boards, they have released catch up stuff for teachers.
Relevant Facebook groups for MFL with lots of free resources are MFL Secondary Matters and GILT Global innovative language teachers. On Twitter use #mfltwitterati
Good luck!

I got an a* as a mature student at gcse with kerboodle and aqa stuff.
Then an A at A level.
So yes i thought it was good. Very good for working from home. I had i think 2hr a week for gcse and 3hr for alevel.
The teacher used a lot of pages from a grammar book too.

Thank you for the ideas. I agree it’s bonkers but there you go! I will look at your recommendations and hopefully find something that works!
