You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Do not give ‘The Every twat for Themselves mob’ the staffroom password as a number of them are operating in an alternative reality.

No DfE muppets allowed

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the toffee vodka is hidden.

If you are fed up with cakes and biscuits there is now a cheeseboard on offer

If you come with a stick to goad us then that is not allowed in the staffroom, especially if you have not used the hand gel. Close the door quietly on your way out and put your mask on.

I've heard it.

And I can't think of any other reason why a parent would be pissed off at their kid having a sandwich for lunch.

Iamnotthe1 · 05/09/2020 10:31

@WhyNotMe40

Hang on - people don't cook for their kids in the evening just because they've had school lunch?! Seriously?!
It's more common than you realise. It's something that's happened in every school I've taught at.

I know right? But it’s pretty common so mummy and daddy can sit down to eat without the pesky kids.
HarveySchlumpfenburger · 05/09/2020 10:39

I’ve definitely seen it on here before. My guess is it’s partly a time thing, especially if kids are in ASC or have a lot of activities outside of school and both parents are working long hours.

I’m not sure many of them have ever seen the portion size on a school meal though.

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 05/09/2020 10:39

All this fake concern about FSM kids pisses me off. ‘They’ rarely invite FSM kids to anything outside school and certainly didn’t want Sam (from a tougher area) sat near StJohn in class. Even in state secondary I used to deal with complaints about the ‘challenging’ pupils and really want some of these pseudo middle class parents want is a school full of naice children whose parents can afford lovely summer holidays

School meal portion sizes are small.

Yes. This was my mum in 1970s. If we all had a hot meal at lunchtime ( she was a teacher and dad's work had a good staff restaurant) then she only needed to do a sandwich tea. Seems logical to me!
TheHoneyBadger · 05/09/2020 10:41

And they must not have picky kids. I remember with ds it would be, eg. they gave us bologbleurch (sic) today so I just ate the pasta.

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 05/09/2020 10:42

@ineedaholidaynow

People will start accusing you of holding a gun to their child's head and threatening to vaccinate them *@StaffAssociationRepresentative*!
I taught in a tough comp I will be able to take them down in a fight. I learnt a few tricks over the years.😂

To be fair I used to give DS sandwiches for tea sometimes when he was in KS1, partly because DH and I would eat much later but mainly because he was a child who could always wangle the catering staff to give him seconds! He is still remembered fondly by them and it
is many years since he was at Primary School Grin
But if school could only provide sandwiches for lunch I would not be complaining.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 05/09/2020 10:45

Did any of you read the cheese and jam sandwich thread yesterday? Part of the issue might be MN food hang ups.

Sandwiches will kill us all, you know.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 05/09/2020 10:46

cheese & ham

Cheese & jam would be quite odd tbf.

TheHoneyBadger · 05/09/2020 10:47

Most of our kids are outside at lunch in usual years. I take an umbrella for duties. Fields aren’t closed till proper boggy and indoor wet day space is tiny.

I’m gaining a new respect for our kids as they never even moan about it and got pissed off when the last head said they have to eat in the dining hall.

MrsHamlet · 05/09/2020 10:49

Cheese and jam is actually quite nice....

WhyNotMe40 · 05/09/2020 10:51

I quite like cheese and jam 🤣 my eldest likes cheese and mango chutney

Just mulling over the seroprevalence thing.
If more teachers have been infected than the general population (about twice as much)
BUT teachers are not more at average risk of dying (the "teachers are not at increased risk" thing was death rates I believe)
THEREFORE there may well be some protective factor about schools that needs further research. Eg maybe frequent exposure to other childhood coronavirii is protective. Which could have implications for vaccinations and treatment.

borntobequiet · 05/09/2020 10:52

My kids loved cheese and jam sandwiches. (I like them too.)

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 05/09/2020 10:52

I did type that and then think ‘it’s probably not hugely different to Brie & cranberry’Grin

WhyNotMe40 · 05/09/2020 10:52

Not more than average

Piggywaspushed · 05/09/2020 10:56

Ermm.. hello... I never used to make an evening meal, and still don't for DH and me. I was gutted when my kids decided they didn't want hot dinners any more (to be fair you wouldn't describe what they provide in your average upper school as 'food') because it meant I had to buy and cook food in the evening.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 05/09/2020 10:57

I found the original paper, Why. The seroprevalence only took place in 5 areas , North London, East London, Oxford, Derby & Manchester.

There was a big variation between regions but within regions the seroprevalence of teachers & students was about the same as the community level in that area.

WhenSheWasBad · 05/09/2020 10:57

I’d eat cheese and jam. Love a cheese and chutney sandwich.

There’s one silver lining to being run off your feet all day with no time to eat. My lockdown weight is starting to shift. Not being able to eat lunch until 3.30pm is clearly helping.

I was so tried yesterday I tried to write on the board and it was barely legible. Really hope it’s just a 1st week at a new school thing or I’m just not going to cope.

ineedaholidaynow · 05/09/2020 10:58

DS has ham and jam sandwiches!

Am I right in thinking that the CI in some of those numbers looks quite big.

WhyNotMe40 · 05/09/2020 10:59

Ah thanks Rafals. Thought there might have been something interesting there for a moment!

Sorry Piggy. Flowers the portion sizes at my kids school are tiny and they come out of school starving - I think they would mightily complain if I just did sandwiches for tea, so I was basing it on that

Piggywaspushed · 05/09/2020 10:59

And, therefore, yes, I'd be pissed off about only sandwiches. You pay for 'school dinner' not a sandwich and they are meant to meet nutrition standards (hahahahahahahaha)

DH's school is doing this and abandoning asap because it is causing chaos in the kitchens.
