Hello!

DH wants to do a National Professional Qualification in Senior Leadership and was wondering if anyone has any tips about what to look for when choosing a course. He's a senior leader in an average-sized primary school.

So, we were wondering:
Are some providers better than others?
Is there anything in particular he should look for?
Has anyone got any experience they'd be willing to share?

Many thanks!

If he's already a senior leader, what does he think the course will teach him?

I think he's been told by his head that it's necessary if he wants to progress to deputy or assistant head. He's also hoping it might give him some clout if he wants to look elsewhere.

I did mine with the Cabot Learning Federation, based on the South-West. Sponsored through school and it was a fine course. Guess it depends where in the country you are based?

Has he tried applying for jobs as DH or AH already? I have been both without NPQSL, and nothing I've heard about it makes me think it would be worthwhile. Apart from getting a job if you couldn't get one without it.

I think the problem is that he feels stuck. It's a relatively new head and they don't get on and he is being passed over time and time again for promotion. She has said she will support him in doing this, so in some respects he is just trying to tick all of the boxes. He is also keeping his eyes open for other opportunities but they are few and far between in this area. We're in the midlands. He's considering an online one at the moment.

Thanks so much for all the replies so far.

I would agree with ohthegoats. I’m an AHT and had no issues getting the job without NPQSL. I’m not quite ready to start thinking about Deputy yet but I’ll be confident to apply without a NPQSL.
