Parents evenings etc

Hi

Just wondering if other secondary schools are still having the usual parents evenings, open evening, sixth form information evenings etc upon our return?

I have three in the first three weeks back. I feel really uncomfortable with so many parents, families etc coming into school so often. As well as the fact I have no childcare as we don’t want to put DC’s grandparents in the position of having them sleep over, which they usually would. My DH is at work too, same situation for many of my colleagues. I just don’t understand the thinking, as if we’re not at enough risk anyway

Ours are on the calendar but they're not going ahead at least in the first half term.

mnahmnah · 26/08/2020 19:30

Ours are on the newsletter going home to parents, so I assume they will be face to face as usual, rather than online.

I think we're going virtual for open evening.

Parents evening we don't have until after Oct half term anyway. I'm not sure of the plans.

Open days/evenings cancelled. For parents evenings we are looking at using a zoom-type timed system of appointments.

Thanks. This is helpful. I know our first evening next Thursday is definitely all parents coming into school. I’m yet to get a response from my line manager about the others

Not relevant for you area, but I just had the invitation to DS's hopefully penultimate parents evening (including election of representatives etc.):
in the gym, SD + masks.

I know the evening next week we are all in our own rooms, rather than everyone in the sports hall like usual. Longer appointments to allow for changeover, sanitising etc. My in-laws are happy to have our children on this occasion as they will have hardly been in school. They might be ok for the other after, but we just don’t want to ask it of them and run the risk of them catching Covid off our children.

I had a reply from my line manager. The yr 12 info evening will probably be remote and they’re still working on the evenings after that. So maybe we won’t be doing them as normal. Fingers crossed!

We had Parents’ Evenings towards the end of last term. Everything was online. I conducted them from my living-room. It was better than I’d thought it would be, to be honest.

We are definitely not having anyone into the buildings during the pandemic; everything will be via the laptop. I assume this will be the case in your school as well. Drop a little email in to ask if it stops you worrying.

Augustbreeze · 28/08/2020 09:17

We're doing parents evenings via zoom, no other meetings scheduled.

Am surprised other schools are not doing likewise especially for non essentials.

mnahmnah · 28/08/2020 16:25

I just can’t believe that having hundreds of families into school is seen as ok! And not realising the childcare implications for staff and wider reaching consequences of so many people mixing. Feeling pretty anxious with it now

No! That's crazy...check your Risk Assessment OP! That would definitely be scoring in the 'High/Red' zone!

Have you spoken to your SLT? Or union rep? I'd not be attending any large gatherings of face to face meetings next term...not a chance!!

hellotoday27 · 28/08/2020 22:46

We're doing virtual open evenings (just head of subject doing a short video). Not sure of the plan for parents evenings.

Just realised, first time in 25 years that I don't have to do an open evening. May have a little dance for that one. Silver linings and all that.

Rachellow · 28/08/2020 22:57

Primary here, we're encouraging phone calls as opposed to parents coming in for one off meetings. Re actual parents' evenings in October I'm lucky to have an outside door and a sink so it'll be lots of hand washing + surface wipe down between meetings. Parents waiting outside until meeting and really trying to avoid additional people such as children but I'm obviously not going to make parents leave their toddler outside.

Pud2 · 29/08/2020 11:19

Ours are all being done via Zoom. Having a load of parents in school would go against everything that is written in our risk assessment.

manicinsomniac · 29/08/2020 15:26

Our parents evenings are via Zoom until half term at least. Dreading it, tbh, I'd really nervous and awkward with virtual communication.

Not heard anything about Open Morning. Probably virtual for the first one, I would think.

mnahmnah · 29/08/2020 17:03

As I said upthread, my line manager said that the yr 12 info evening in two weeks will be remote. After that, they’re still working on what they will do. BUT, meeting all the families of our tutor group over two days and an evening, for the whole school, will still happen next week

Open evening is in three weeks. We have A LOT of families come from three counties as an oversubscribed school. I cannot see how we should do this at all

hedgehogger1 · 29/08/2020 20:21

I assume they won't be happening. I've got a kid going into year 6 and we've not decided on school yet. Wish I'd looked round last year now!

Phineyj · 30/08/2020 11:47

All our events of this kind are going to be virtual (private school). The only non-staff coming in are individual speakers as we can easily social distance them. INSET is in person but SD in Hall and gym. Concerts will be streamed and plays etc have been postponed.
