Anyone else dreading the early mornings?

I've been teaching for over 20 years and every holiday I do the same thing - stay up later, have a long lie in. I'm now at the point where I am sleeping til 9am every day, and that's even with going to bed before midnight! Next week I need to start getting up at 6am again Sad

Every time I say I won't do it, but then once I'm on holiday all my good intentions go out the window! I have a teenage who sleeps even later than me so no incentive to get up early unless I have booked something. I am intending to start setting my alarm for 8am every day this week, and then 7am for the beginning of next week, so I can manage 6am by next Thursday.

Has anyone got any other suggestions/ fail proof methods that work? In case you haven't guessed - I am NOT a morning person! Grin

I get really into afternoon naps. Then I go back to school and I feel like saying, "What? You want me to stay awake all day?" Grin

MrsHamlet · 23/08/2020 12:23

I love a nanna nap! I have one of those alarm clocks with the sunrise which helps a lot as it's a gentle wake up - but I am not looking forward to 6am :(

Cracklefraggle · 23/08/2020 12:45

Same! I needed a siesta after getting up for results day.

Juiceey · 23/08/2020 12:49

I'm exactly the same as you and full of regret every time. I'm just going to go cold turkey and accept I'll be knackered for a week or so!

thebookeatinggirl · 23/08/2020 14:56

I'm really not looking forward to getting up at all. And because of staggered starts mine are coming in at 8.30am - I may finish earlier, but that's still getting up, and in and organised 15 minutes earlier than usual every day.

Purpleice · 23/08/2020 15:30

We’re the same here. I’m pulling it back a bit. Going back to work doesn’t stop me napping though -I’ll sometimes have 20 minutes after tea. I learnt the skill as a new mum and it hasn’t left me.

flumposie · 24/08/2020 12:57

My insomnia has ramped up since March. I'm often still awake at 3am but then I can get up at 9am. I'm dreading it when I have to be up at 6.30 again.

PoloNeckKnickers · 24/08/2020 16:36

I've been getting up at 7am instead of 6am during the holidays. I go to bed around the same time during term time (between 9 & 10pm) so it's not a problem. I know a lot of kids will struggle. During lockdown when runging families for welfare checks, several of my class were still in bed well past midday Confused.

PumpkinPie2016 · 24/08/2020 17:09

We have been getting up later too, even 6 year old DS. This week, I am setting my alarm and getting up earlier in preparation for next Tuesday!

hellotoday27 · 25/08/2020 00:35

Lots of coffee on the first day and wing it. Get an early night the next night and body clock resets quite quickly. I consider 9am start in the holidays to be early and its not unknown for me to sleep to midday (in my 50's and not just out of Uni, just a real night owl).

Hate first day back but having been teaching 25 years i honestly can't remember a first day that I didn't yawn through. I'm usually ok by 2nd or 3rd day.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 25/08/2020 02:58

I bloody love a lie in. Beyond 9am to be fair and I refuse to feel guilty about it. I also have teens who sleep a lot layer than me.
I also love a nana nap.

I just make sure I'm productive in the day to make up for it.

The only downside is that they leave me wide awake late at night hence my posting here at nearly 3am.

MrsHamlet · 25/08/2020 09:48

I was massively jet lagged on inset last year, not helped by the fact that I was summoned to a meeting with the head at 8am in which he wanted to know if I'd planned it properly.
I have no idea how I got through that day.

termtimeterror · 27/08/2020 02:59

Same, I am awake now with neck pains and muscles aches in my legs which is anxiety symptoms for me. I haven't had them all summer so it's back to work related. I've not been getting up until 9am so school at 8am is going to be a nightmare.

Juiceey · 27/08/2020 15:24

I've already replied to this thread but i'm going to be dead on my feet! I know it! Need to force myself NOT to nap after school to help my body clock reset.

marplemead · 28/08/2020 20:23

I am! I need to be up at 5.30am for school, which is going to be a massive change to the lie ins until 8/9am. It only takes a few days for my body clock to re-set, so I'll just push through those first few days. I suffer from SAD, so the first term is always really grim for me, and really not helped by having a long commute.

Rachellow · 28/08/2020 23:04

Not looking forward to it! Kids are in from Thursday and I have to be up at 6 so think I'll start putting the alarm on from Monday. I've enjoyed my 10am lie ins!

PumpkinPie2016 · 29/08/2020 09:22

I was aiming to get up at 6am today. Alarm went off. I finally got up at 6.25am so I suppose that's an improvement Grin

I did go running too -does that count Grin

BG2015 · 29/08/2020 17:01

My DP is usually a real early riser so always wakes me with a brew at 6.15 but he's had an operation so his body clock is all over the place.

Dreading it

FluffyPJs · 29/08/2020 23:15

I've been setting my alarm for 8am but today I went straight back to sleep after turning it off and woke up at 10.45! I know I must have needed the sleep but now I'm even more worried about next week Confused I know from previous experience that by 9am on the first day the tiredness will hit me and by 4pm I'll be buzzing around like a loon (from one extreme to the other). I'm just glad we have two inset days to ease me in before the children are back!

I managed to get up at 6.20 this morning, but I have to leave the house for 6.15 when term gets going Envy

ScarlettDarling · 01/09/2020 15:06

The thought of the early mornings is adding to my already out of control anxiety! My body clock has been loving a good 9 hours sleep getting up at 8.30 but next week it’s back to 6 o clock getty ups. Can’t imagine how I’ll ever heave myself out of bed!

gettingalife · 01/09/2020 20:08

I could have written your post! However, I'm now in my 2nd week back and my body clock has fallen back into school mode.

First 6.30am get up was dreadful, second not so bad as I fell asleep at 8pm the night before due to being beyond knackered. Then it was awful on the third day and by Thursday it clicked into place. I even woke naturally at 7am each morning of the Bank Hol weekend and morning was actually fine.

Grit your teeth and get through the first 3 days, then you'll be fine imo.

FluffyPJs · 01/09/2020 20:26

I set my alarm for 7 today (not back at school till Thursday) to ease me in gently, but I woke up naturally at 6.15. By 10am I was struggling a bit but then after lunch I had a second wind Smile I'm hoping the rest of the week will be as good!
