You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff. Baiters and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here only if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the toffee vodka is hidden.

If you are fed up with cakes and biscuits there is now a cheeseboard on offer

If you come with a stick to beat us with then please do so elsewhere and not in the staffroom

I hate the first day of term feeling - kids look at me as I might know stuff and I'm never entirely sure that I do!! Good luck @Mistressiggi

Ickabog · 17/08/2020 06:57

Good luck Mistressiggi

Breaking news - GCSE results in Northern Ireland will be solely based on teacher predictions.

Crikey

Hercwasonaroll · 17/08/2020 08:19

Blimey, pressure is on Gavlar now.

Still not sure CAGs being awarded is the right answer either.

noblegiraffe · 17/08/2020 08:27

I think I’d be ok with a 1 grade drop cap using the algorithm, with no Us unless that was the CAG.

Flagsfiend · 17/08/2020 08:34

I really don't get why this wasn't the case to begin with, it's all very well saying teachers might have been a bit optimistic but surely that would result in a maximum of a 1 grade reduction. Although even with this several of my students would have been unfairly downgraded :(
Hercwasonaroll · 17/08/2020 08:38

I don't understand why nobles policy wasn't policy either.

A one grade drop on the day is fine. Manual reviews for Us and more than a one grsde drop should have been done.

Kidneybingo · 17/08/2020 08:50

I'm not necessarily happy with drops if they are linked to school PA because of cohort changes in option subjects. Linked to individual PA is likely to cause fewer problems, although would still not be perfect.

MrsHamlet · 17/08/2020 08:50

Noble for Secretary of State...

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 17/08/2020 08:56

Where is Gav today? Is he still hiding somewhere?

noblegiraffe · 17/08/2020 09:02

There would still be an appeals process though.

I think they’ve left it too long to do this, A-level students need an instant solution today. Uni places are being filled and accommodation places are running low.

In the fridge with Boris?!

MadameMinimes · 17/08/2020 09:21

The BBC are reporting today that results in larger sixth forms are lower than the 3 year average. That suggests large cohorts were marked down by more than they should have been in order to counterbalance the fact that grades went up in smaller cohorts. If it’s true it’s a scandal of epic proportions. The national grade distribution should not have been protected by lowering some schools’ results to below what they have achieved over the last 3 years, whilst schools with smaller cohorts had results that rose. I say this as someone in charge of a Sixth Form where 10/15 A Levels offered were cohorts smaller than 15. For us the difference was startling between what happened to large vs. small cohorts. Whether kids got into uni or not sometimes hinged on whether they’d chosen Chemistry or Physics, Psychology or French etc. We were very fortunate in some ways but that doesn’t make it any less unfair.

HedyPrism · 17/08/2020 09:38

It's so incredibly unfair. That Eton letter will be good to share with those outside education going 'but that can't be right'.

Rosieposy4 · 17/08/2020 09:41

@MadameMinimes that is what happened to my school, large sixth form ( approx 600) overall we were marked down by 35% and reaults are lower than our usual cohort pa.

NeurotrashWarrior · 17/08/2020 09:46

Wow 16th republic already!

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 17/08/2020 11:04

I reckon Gav has been on a French trip and now needs to isolate.

Bloody hell it is hard work trying to make people understand that they is a difference between UCAS predicted and what goes on the CAG.

Clearly some schools will have over predicted on CAG and so therefore there needs to be some tolerance placed on grades. If the school is within tolerance then Noble's policy should be applied. I am sure there will be a vacancy coming up ...

Is it wishful thinking to hope the position is filled by someone who knows what the fuck they're doing? Grin

James O Brien on LBC has everyone checking their fridges. Even the DUP. Grin

At best you’re ‘hopeful’. I bet there’s not a person with a PGCE they’ve never used anywhere near the Department for Education! The only teacher I remember being in charge in recent times was Estelle Morris and that’s going back some now and she didn’t last long. It would make a difference, that’s for sure.

RigaBalsam · 17/08/2020 12:22

There are reports of a possibly-imminent announcement on the exams fiasco. The BBC initially reported that such an announcement was “imminent” then said “later today”. The Times Radio correspondent Ross Kempsell has been told to expect something at 4pm.
We’re working to confirm this independently. Hold on to your hats.

FrippEnos · 17/08/2020 12:31

As we are still waiting for the new guidance that was supposed to be announced on the 11th. I am not going to hold my breath,

noblegiraffe · 17/08/2020 12:33

They have to say something today, A-level students can’t wait any longer for appeals info, and GCSE results are imminent!
