Teacher bashing getting me down

Hi everyone,

I am sure there have been lots of threads about this during the pandemic but I've largely kept off social media (including MN) during lockdown.

Anyway, I am beginning to get really down about all of the hatred towards teachers that is out there at the moment. I found teaching last term really hard - as I know the vast majority of teachers did. The Daily Mail and Telegraph have both had stories recently with really misleading headlines - today's DT headline states that schools are planning to be one week on one week off - whereas the actuality is of course that this is a back up plan for year groups if there is a spike and teachers certainly won't be having any time off.

The comments underneath were vile - really vile. Teachers are lazy, have had a six month holiday, don't deserve key worker status etc etc...

I KNOW I shouldn't read them but I do, and I just feel so sad and upset. I've really enjoyed my teaching career so far but recently I've wondered if I should try something else. I feel I am not allowed to be proud of my job anymore.

Any advice - or just a shake?

Schools have "client base" which can't move very easily, especially secondary. They also have a large number of "clients" who all want different things. It's why we feel bashed sometimes I think. No matter how much we try to accommodate everyone's preferences and desires, we just can't, and often they can't just leave, as they could many businesses or institutions.

I'm in the hairdresser. In the 20 minutes I've been here so far, I've heard snippets of conversation from 4 chats. Obviously they don't know that I'm a teacher, so this is just unbiased chat.

"I feel really sorry for teachers... "

"I'm concerned about Johnny's teacher, she's near retirement..."

"Secondary schools, I mean, how I'm earth are they going to do social distancing? It's joke, poor teachers trying to police that!"

"I hope teachers are enjoying their holidays to the max"

So. That's the real world.

TBF, its only the bubble that is MN where TB is rife.
Everyone that I know, when they speak about this wants to know how schools are going to work within the guidelines and feel srroy/worried for us.

Reinforces my belief that the teacher bashers are just goady trolls with no real opinions. Just a shitty spoon.
