You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff. Baiters and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here only if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the toffee vodka is hidden.

If you are fed up with cakes and biscuits there is now a cheeseboard on offer

If you come with a stick to beat us with then please do so elsewhere and not in the staffroom

There’s plenty of places it could be weaved in. I suspect covid fatigue might set in though.

MsAwesomeDragon · 04/08/2020 00:15

Exponential growth appears in maths briefly at higher tier GCSE, although I often discuss it a little when talking about indices with younger pupils or Foundation pupils. It then appears in more detail at A Level. A huge number of pupils leave school having either never encountered the concept or never understanding it, which is a shame as I really do think it's important.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 04/08/2020 00:38

That would explain a lot MrsAwesomeDragon. I’ve seen a lot of posters saying they don’t see why we have to do x, y, z because the numbers are tiny at the moment. Like they don’t realise tiny numbers of infections can become big quite quickly.

And it’s probably why the ‘schools back in full, full time’ brigade don’t seem to have clocked how quickly that might lead to schools closing again and possibly local lockdowns. Which is odd, because you’d have thought most of them would have seen the effect of 1 case of chicken pox in a reception class.

Quite.

Look what happened in Victoria.

Today's BBC top story is reassuring....

Sadly I didn't note the sarcasm so was deeply disappointed when it was, in fact, not reassuring Sad.

Made the mistake of clicking on the good news thread only to find it descended into calling us all dementors and one reknowned TB saying that only positive symptomatic pupils should be isolated, not any of their contacts as 'there's so many asymptomatic cases anyway'. Grrr.

Piggywaspushed · 04/08/2020 06:38

Sorry bea, next time I am sarcastic I will write

Won't be using that much... Grin

Piggywaspushed · 04/08/2020 06:39

Someone from the numbers thread who is not a teacher needs to go and piss all over the shiny happy people thread.

Piggywaspushed · 04/08/2020 06:42

The Lancet keep talking about the plausible part time return of children. Do they know something we don't??

Piggywaspushed · 04/08/2020 06:45

This si what the 'get them all back to school at all costs' mob just do not get :

we have assumed that reopening schools is not a binary off–on switch, but instead that reopening schools would be accompanied by broader changes. School reopening would allow parents to go back to work, as reopening a proportion of businesses are anticipated to be an important step in restarting economic activity. Specifically, we simulated increasing not only the transmission in schools, but also increased transmission in workplaces and the community

Piggywaspushed · 04/08/2020 06:48

Oh ! Oh dear! Best do that then!!

We also have not modelled in this study the behaviour of young people who are not in school and, specifically, we have not assumed increased social mixing outside schools. Inclusion of this parameter is possible within our framework, but it is currently difficult to quantify.

And what about universities??

RigaBalsam · 04/08/2020 07:13

Hiding back in here there are some awful people out there. No compassion for losing holiday money-my own fault essentially and the usual.

Reopening schools in September WILL lead to a catastrophic second wave of coronavirus unless NHS test and trace drastically improves, major study claims
Not sure which study but similar to BBC ie our testing and tracking isn't up to scratch.

MrsHerculePoirot · 04/08/2020 07:28

That seems to be what the study @monkeytennis97 is saying - perhaps it is from that?

Danglingmod · 04/08/2020 07:31

Anyone else watch this story on CNN last night? Pretty scary...

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.cnn.com/cnn/2020/08/03/us/gwinnett-schools-covid-employees/index.html

And I see when googling today that it's made it into the Mail. So they've changed their tune a bit?

Wow I've loads to catch up on here.

We are away and I must say a glorious day at the beach, no WiFi and in the sun has been marvellous, I even swam in the sea no wetsuit Shock which in the north, a stones throw from Scotland, is pretty impressive!

Nobel your analysis upthread re option 3 and 4 is bang. I also think the unions are taking a back seat as they know the government have blood on their hands if this goes belly up. I've not heard a peep from mine.

The track and trace is not up and fully running. It was never going to be so till at least sept. That's been noticeably kept quiet. The lancet paper is also being less cautious in using the idea that kids don't spread it. Kids in humid classrooms in the winter is a different matter.

The government are panicking; none of this is "might happen" it's going to have to, and that second wave is looking pretty certain at the mo.

NeurotrashWarrior · 04/08/2020 08:11

Piggy, you're damn right. they never see the bigger picture.

I was furious with a local mum friend, in an affluent area, who was spouting about it "not being a level playing field" because the key worker kids were in school and her y2 child wasn't Confused

WhyNotMe40 · 04/08/2020 08:16

Checking in as after a week or so off,.the return to work anxiety is already here. Had awful dreams last night.
Haven't caught up on the thread yet though

plasticboxesrock · 04/08/2020 08:21

Just listening to Dr David Nabarro on Radio 4 - lots of common sense.
"This virus isn't going away for the foreseeable future. This virus is very dangerous. If I sounds like a really dull person - that's too bad. Let's get on with it as a society"

plasticboxesrock · 04/08/2020 08:25

Also another doctor - Dr Jasmina - talking about test and trace not working. Now Simon Clark from the government trying to defend the system which isn't working. "We're confident that schools can re-open safely, full-time across the country from the autumn...I can't be drawn as to any specific decisions that might be taken... schools are a massive priority"

tadjennyp · 04/08/2020 08:27

Do they not remember from their own school days that there was never a level playing field anyway? Hmm
Are you staying near BuT neuro ? Was on a fabulous beach just south of there a couple of weeks ago with family. Never any need to worry about social distancing! Enjoy!

NeurotrashWarrior · 04/08/2020 08:36

No tad a bit further south. Probably 10 stones throw tbh...! Closer to the island where they like to shame those who try to cross too late if you know what I mean! Sea is still cold though!

tadjennyp · 04/08/2020 08:43

Ah yes, MIL was involved in an archaeology project there. Stunningly beautiful and never crowded.

RigaBalsam · 04/08/2020 09:06

Simon Clarke trotting out they have missed half a year! Get it right they have missed 13 weeks. So a third at the most. Should get his facts right.
