Classroom Behaviour Secondary

Just wanted to ask what your thoughts are on what behaviour might look like when we return in September. So many parents we had contact with during lockdown was that they had lost control and some were disappearing for hours on end or in trouble with the police. Many also disengaged with online classes and submerged in social media.

So I’m thinking of contingencies really you prevent any blow ups and support to put in place for students struggling to adjust.

Do you feel behaviour will be poor given the return to routines, regimen and discipline?

Based on year 10 so far, top half will be hyper focused and terrified, bottom half could be exceptionally challenging. Fewer breaktimes and not moving between lessons, I’m actually quite nervous.

Same here. It’s the 5% that will need an alternative to mainstream learning where the teacher tried to de escalate as much as possible. We no longer have scope for this sort of repair work to the extent we had previously

I have concerns about students being stuck in their bubbles all day in secondary, without the opportunity to move around, go outside/have much time outside- all these things help certain students regulate their behaviour. A lot of secondaries are cutting pastoral time in the morning, which means that tutors aren’t picking up things early on and helping students who have a difficult, chaotic start to the day ‘transition’ and get their ‘school-heads’ on. Also, staff on the move across big sites every lesson are not going to be able to have a quiet word at the end of the lesson or be available to students who are worried and upset- we are going to be haring to our next lesson in an attempt to ‘only’ be five minutes late. Classes left unattended in bubbles at lesson changeover are going to be ripe for bullying or impulsive behaviour.

I know of several secondaries where students have to be in the same room with the same teacher for about five hours over the day doing the same subject. When you think that many lose interest and try and faff around after half an hour.... Nightmare!
