My own child's first day of school- can I take it paid or unpaid?

My child starts school in Sept. I work part time and she is starting on one of my working days and only doing 9:30-11:30. Can I request this off? Is it the discretion of the head or academy?

Total discretion of head/MAT. No entitlement at all.

Puts gives time to drop off on the first day but we wouldn't get 2 hours.

It’s at their discretion. I was able to go and also went to the first nativity and sports day. I’m lucky that my HT has a young family herself and also that I had been at the school long enough to be established as someone who would ‘give’ as well as ‘take’.

It is at the discretion of the Head. It's hard as a teacher because you often miss school stuff.

I couldn't go to DS reception nativity the last year as it was on a day/time when I had my Y13s. I am the only specialist for the subject and it's a tricky one to cover.

Luckily, the school DS goes to allow parents to film/take pics as long as they are not shared on social media so my husband and mum went and filmed it. DH usually films the family assembly as well if DS is getting a certificate.

If you can't have the time, ask whoever is taking her to take plenty of pics. It's difficult for us but I honestly cannot remember who took me to school on my first day.

In my school you'd be allowed to start late to take her, but not to finish early

If you can’t get time off don’t worry. My children both went to breakfast club on their very first days at school and being summer born were just turned 4.

I had assumed because they were used to being in nursery from 7.30-5.30 that it would be an easy transition but thru did find the day tiring with breakfast club, school, then after school club despite being the same hours but that is the only negative. They loved their first days and I think they were made more of a fuss of as their play assistant and teachers knew that they didn’t have mummy there to drop them off or pick them up.

My head's been fab and I've got first day off and an early finish for the second day so we can ease my son in to his new routine (he's not great with transitions). But it is at their discretion.

Not, not allowed. No first days at school, Christmas plays, sports days, star of the week awards or anything else with current headteacher.

Just arranged this with my head today (helps that he's also head of her school.) He's quite happy to be flexible where possible around nativity etc, and said I absolutely should take her on her first day of school. My school is only ten mins down the road so barring meltdowns I'll only be a little late starting that day - she's not allowed in before 8:45.

Loving my head at the moment!
