Being able to go to the loo when you need to.

sarahmisss · 28/06/2020 08:12

@CallmeAngelina

I know . Why can't we just put our hands up and ask like children haha.

My classes have tried to tell me it is fine for me to go to the toilet during lessons before. Usually when I've had the 5th student ask to go in the first 15 minutes after lunch and I've pointed out that they should have gone to the toilet at lunch and that I can't go in lessons. These are secondary students who are trying to avoid work, not students that actually need the toilet.

Having a work/life balance. I feel human again after nearly leaving teaching this year. I'm working around 30 hours a week, in school twice a week and am able to relax. My partner and kids are amazed at the difference in me.

I'm moving schools in September so I'm hoping that I don't lose this; I'll definately work more but I do need to have more of a life!

Flagsfiend · 28/06/2020 08:40

I will miss my coffee machine.

I will not miss staring at a screen all day.

CallmeAngelina · 28/06/2020 08:51

Ah yes. Decent coffee.

Teaandcustardcream · 28/06/2020 09:23

I will miss the extra 90 minutes a day I get by not commuting.

Danglingmod · 28/06/2020 09:33

I'm definitely working as many hours as in school...

I will miss being able to go to the loo, being able to have a hot drink, hang my washing out.

I AM missing the commute (bizarrely didn't expect to) because it's my only peaceful half an hour x 2 of the day!

ohthegoats · 28/06/2020 10:15

My drive home is stressful - I always have to leave too early, traffic, not being back in time for afterschool club pickup.
I like not having chairs thrown at me - I don't wince or cower anywhere at the moment, which is good. I've moved some of the worst offenders out of my way this coming year, I'm fed up of things hitting me in the face.

But otherwise I just can't wait to get back to it:

I love my commute (short, podcasts, coffee, not stressful at all on the way in, my favourite time of day)
I love my school, the head is great
My colleagues are interesting
I like the actual teaching bit
I hate HATE HATE having to work crunched over a screen all day - my eyes hurt a lot

CarrieBlue · 28/06/2020 11:45

I hate having work at home - it’s bearable in the evenings but I hate it being there in my house all day.

I love being able to get washing done through the week rather than spending all day Saturday feeding the washing machine

Danglingmod · 28/06/2020 11:47

Oh my god. Yes, the 100% screen time. My eyes are screwed, I'm sure of it.

I would never sign up for a job that was just staring at a screen for 10 hours a day. It's horrid; I hate it so much. Conversely, the individual attention I'm giving each student with feedback and their gratitude and progress is awesome and almost makes it worth it.

Danglingmod · 28/06/2020 11:50

And, yes, gradually I have spread my working day/hours into basically being the whole week, Monday to Sunday, waking up to going to bed but with the odd half an hour off to do washing or unpack food shop, or the odd hour off to watch a TV programme with dh. Initially, I was much better at getting up really early and sticking to normal working hours and then breaking off totally.

Beawillalwaysbetopdog · 28/06/2020 11:53

Walking the dog longer. I'm in 2 days a week now (we have an unusually high number of keyworkers for a secondary) but I'm using my commute time of almost 2 hours a day to walk instead, much more relaxing Smile

noblegiraffe · 28/06/2020 12:55

Joe Wicks in the morning. The annoyingly cheery bearded one may have a point about exercise setting you up for the day.

Asuitablecat · 28/06/2020 13:24

The time. I'm not forcing everyone out at 7 ish every day. When I finish work now around 530/6, that really is it- done for the day. I've not had to do much at weekends either. This is because my 'frees' are not interrupted by behaviour issues or urgent emails etc, so.I can.actually do.stuff.

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 28/06/2020 13:25

Going to the loo when I want, being able to have breakfast in the morning, the short ‘commute’, no detentions, being able to sort out washing, being able to potter round the garden, home cooking, listening to radio, being with my family more...

Maybe I need a job with a better work life balance

PumpkinPie2016 · 28/06/2020 14:47

Drinking hot cups of tea/coffee. I make them at work and they invariably end up cold before I have had chance to drink them.

I won't miss trying to hold meetings and lessons on teams/zoom. I live rurally and my internet connection isn't always great!

likeafishneedsabike · 28/06/2020 15:04

Was going to say being able to sort the washing bit by bit but beaten to it! What a tragic lot we are. In the summer term I usually hang the washing out before work at 6.30am like the maniac I am. Nice to do it at a civilised hour.

PumpkinPie2016 · 28/06/2020 15:39

@ohthegoats where do you work Shock

cheesecurdsandgravy · 28/06/2020 15:46

I will also miss the loo breaks and hot tea. Ditto the long commute and early starts to make sure I beat the traffic. Also, Joe Wicks. Before I had my son I would swim or run at 6am every day before setting off for work. Can’t do that now, but doing exercise every morning has really helped me.

I will miss seeing my son every day - on work days I get about 30 mins AM and an hour PM with him. Don’t get me wrong, I have missed my childminder more than most of my family and friends... but he’s come on so much in three months of undivided attention.

StripyHorse · 28/06/2020 16:05

Part of the reason I retrained to be a teacher was so I didn't have to sit at a computer screen all day 🤦‍♀️. At least when I worked in an office it was at a desk designed for computers with an office chair and proper monitor. I am NOT going to miss the aching shoulders I currently have from my makeshift workstation.

I am going to miss the extra sleep I gain from not having a 1 1/2 hr round trip each day.

I am going to miss being able to go to the loo drink coffee and scoff biscuits eat fruit all day.

I am going to miss being able to keep on top of the washing throughout the week.

ohthegoats · 28/06/2020 16:31

@PumpkinPie2016 Nice school with a very few extremely tricky kids! I haven't missed them at all, which I feel really bad about. But honestly, I'm writing reports now and realise that I've missed out on getting to know some lovely ones properly, because I spent so much of my time and energy on 2 or 3 challenging ones. Not fair on any of us.

DreamingofBrie · 28/06/2020 18:30

To be honest, I'll miss having lunch with my own dc every day most of all.

I'll miss not having to wear "business dress" for work - dreading putting on a fitted dress and heels again!

I'll miss the flexibility of being able to sort out housework in my free periods.

I'll miss not having to do lunch or bus duty Grin.

hedgehogger1 · 28/06/2020 21:33

@likeafishneedsabike I do my washing and hang it out in the evening to be darked on
