Ok, so say teachers "get over themselves"

Let's say enough staff decide that on the whole we are happy with the risks, the disease is mild in most cases etc etc

How long before schools have to close again anyway because staff are having to self isolate with "symptoms"?

And you would like us to say what? That we'll all go off sick?

What you should be asking is how long until unecessary deaths. I suggest we now all stay away from the thread and shut it down.

I think in my area, because cases are low, we would probably make it to the summer holidays... just. Then, I'll assume cases stay fairly steady over summer, because the amount of people being stupid is not too high (which is pretty optimistic). Then we come back in September... and I think we will definitely not then make it past the October half term and will probably have to close until the following February half term at least. I think this is probably a pretty optimistic evaluation.

nellodee · 16/05/2020 13:02

I'll clarify - I think this is because cases will be still be too high to try to trace effectively (partially because we went back to school in this scenario) and the usual cold symptoms will mean lots of people self isolating - not just in teaching but across the whole workforce.

Ihavechildren · 16/05/2020 13:02

What? No it was a genuine question about practicalities. I wonder how long schools will be able to stay open for because staff and their families will get coughs etc, even if not "the" cough and under current rules will need to self isolate. Which will have a huge impact on staff numbers, as we saw before the closure.

That's how I read your question as well, Ihave. I don't think it's necessarily Coronavirus that will cause it, but every other cough and cold out there. If we want any chance of anything staying open, the government are really going to have to get their act together on testing availability and turnaround time.

Sorry - the inverted commas made me think.you were being goady.

Realistically, I don't know. Figures are shooting up in my area.

Beawillalwaysbetopdog · 16/05/2020 13:39

Why the inverted comments if you are being genuine? Hmm

I wonder if testing/results will be made more of a priority is schools? Then,For example, if someone in my bubble was symptomatic, if they were tested and it was negative the whole bubble would be able to return and not isolate for the 14 days?

hellotoday27 · 16/05/2020 15:07

I like to see testing much more available.
I had to go off early just before the lockdown because of a cough.
I was fairly sure it was just a cough (rest of symptoms didn't really match up) but I couldn't stay in work with a cough as others would have panicked plus there was an outside chance it was Covid - who knows.

Until we can get all tested with a fairly quick turnaround of results I can see all sorts of problems in the schools. Personally I'd like to get back and teach my secondary classes especially the exam classes who I'm very worried about but the practicalities of the situation worry me.

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 16/05/2020 15:45

It depends upon the school. Once a certain percentage of teaching staff are off then the school will close. We had to close for two days a few years ago because of norovirus.

nellodee · 16/05/2020 19:39

I think the inverted commas were because the symptoms were just as likely to be for regular winter bugs, rather than Coronavirus.

Greysparkles · 21/05/2020 18:20

My local hospital has a turnaround of 24hrs for emergency covid tests.
I'm assuming they will look to upscale this so quick testing can be used in schools and other keyworker positions
