It was announced today that our college is to open on the 1st June for Y10 & Y12. Anyone else's secondary school opening? Confused

Our school has sent out a survey to parents to judge how many would like their year 10s in

wembollian · 20/05/2020 12:33

In the news today, they're saying that there are some serious doubts over primary schools reopening on 1st June, but no mention seems to be made of secondary schools.

Sometimes it seems a bit like the government or the media aren't aware that many secondary schools are planning to reopen on that day too. I'm worried that we're going to fall through a sort of loophole if they say primary reopening will be delayed for a while, but make no mention of secondaries.

Is anyone else concerned about this, or am I worrying unnecessarily?

Piggywaspushed · 20/05/2020 12:44

I think the media definitely isn't wemb and I am not sure Boris does!!

This leaves every school doing whatever the hell they think it is that the gov intends them to do. Not good.

SansaSnark · 20/05/2020 12:55

I agree that there's going to be a huge disparity in provision between secondary schools, and some are definitely planning things that I don't think the government is expecting- like all Y10 + Y12 back on 1st June.

I personally think part of the reason that the government doesn't want all secondary students back is the increased numbers on public transport- so if larger numbers of Y10/12 start using it daily from 1st June, this could be a problem.

However, I also think the guidance is deliberately ambiguous, so they can blame schools for doing too much/not enough, rather than taking responsibility themselves.

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 20/05/2020 13:05

Secondary school - we are still definitely not opening on 1 June. Head reiterated it in briefing and also said we would definitely not be open during school holidays.

wembollian · 20/05/2020 13:17

But my secondary are definitely planning for Year 10 to go back and all the rotas and groupings are sorted. I feel like we've fallen through a crack and aren't even coming under consideration.

PrincessButtercuppp · 20/05/2020 14:45

I'm not going back as it's important I am able to visit my parents risk free and remain healthy. We have been teaching full online lessons so pupils aren't missing out anyway. In state schools I don't think much of any teaching has been going on so can understand why state schools would need to go back.

Mistressiggi · 20/05/2020 14:50

Princessbuttercup I had to read your post twice to check that I really had read such claptrap - just what we need, a teacher posting in staffroom to slag off others teachers. Hmm

wembollian · 20/05/2020 16:16

@Mistressiggi I couldn't believe it either! And in the staff room too!

AppleKatie · 20/05/2020 16:26

She’s taking the piss surely?

Nobody has that a high an opinion of themselves as a snowflake who is so much more special than the plebs?

Piggywaspushed · 20/05/2020 16:38

Tell me this is insane : year 10 and 12 coming in in very limited numbers for meetings but ALL staff expected on site all day....what happened to WFH when it is possible to do so?

ineedaholidaynow · 20/05/2020 16:40

DS's Independent School are not opening for Y10 or Y12. Going to continue with full timetable remote learning.

They are opening the Junior School for YR, Y1 and Y6.

wonderstuff · 20/05/2020 16:42

I don't believe that any online teaching is in anyway close to actual classroom teaching. If all the kids are high ability and you're simply delivering content I suppose, but I've never taught a lesson where I'm not constantly adapting to cater for the needs of various children.

Anyway, our state secondary are proposing a 1:1 consultation with each year 10 student. Head is asking for volunteers and thinks we can see them all for 30 minutes each over one school week. Only working mornings to allow time to set work etc. in the afternoon. 1 student per classroom, 2.5m from teacher, 10 minutes between kids. I'm happy with that. We think the number of key workers children attending will rise.

I'm so desperate to go back to normal. I hate this.

wonderstuff · 20/05/2020 16:45

Our head says they've not had clear guidance from DfE yet (this morning).

ineedaholidaynow · 20/05/2020 16:48

No I don’t think the guidance has been published yet. Which is absolutely ridiculous

wonderstuff · 20/05/2020 17:10

There's still a week and a half!

ineedaholidaynow · 20/05/2020 17:21

How impatient are we? There is plenty of time (ignoring the fact that half term starts on Friday!)

StrawberryJam200 · 20/05/2020 18:50

@wonderstuff that sounds sensible and the closest to what I envisaged when Boris first made the announcement.... but very far away from what some schools seem to be thinking of, including that of @Piggywaspushed ......

wonderstuff · 20/05/2020 18:58

You're not expecting a half term are you?
Tbf I'm not on the rota next week, slt are covering bank holiday so most will get that off. I'm very lucky to have a great head. I've worked for some awful heads and in normal times that's horrible, at the moment it must be beyond grim.

Cherrypie32 · 21/05/2020 07:31

I’ve noticed huge disparity between schools proposed provision. After BJ’s announcement I presumed schools would follow his intention to get all primary back in some form before summer. The school I work at is moving mountains to make this happen with bucket loads of positivity. The school my daughter attends won’t open 1st June and all comms states don’t send if you don’t need to.

ValancyRedfern · 21/05/2020 08:40

No plans to go back at my school. But another local school is full steam ahead on all Yr 10s back from 1st June.

wonderstuff · 21/05/2020 08:55

Huge disparity because the DfE aren't giving clear advice. Huge problems as well with the delays in the contact tracing system. Having successfully terrified everyone in to staying at home more needs to be done to reassure people that it's now safer.

Piggywaspushed · 21/05/2020 08:57

valancy how are they going to unplan that if the advice says no that is not what should be done??

Piggywaspushed · 21/05/2020 08:59

And who will all this disparity be blamed on, I wonder??

Given the already acknowledged variability in online provision they can't now allow some schools to run face to face full on lessons! We'll be back to 'why can this school do that and the rubbishy state school my children attend is only...'

wonderstuff · 21/05/2020 09:08

We need strong heads to do what they think is best for all. Can't imagine recruitment of heads will improve after this, impossible position really.
Our head has had lots of complaints that local private schools are doing more, but he can't magic up the IT infrastructure we don't have.

I hope that people will see that the government are a shambles and vote accordingly after all this.
