Yr 10s & 12s from 1st June

Any thoughts about this? It’s in the guidance which came out yesterday, though it sounds like schools are going to have a little more autonomy than the primaries are.

I only teach 6th form (specialist subject setting) and am keen to sort something out to get my yr 12s back in somehow - possibly part time/small groups initially. Am currently teaching them on zoom and it’s not ideal.

Our SLT are meeting today to plan our reopening. I’m trying not to overthink it until they announce the plan, but I’m expecting: pupils to stay in the same classrooms, teachers to move to them; staff redeployed to these year groups whether they usually teach them or not; prescriptive lesson plans so that each child gets the same ‘diet’ ready for hopefully being back with their usual class/teacher in September...

So do you think secondary schools/colleges will open for Y10/12? The guidance seemed to concentrate more on their remote home learning and that face to face contact would support that not replace it.

The initial speech seemed to say that @ineedaholiday, but the more detailed guidance seems to suggest Y10 & 12 should be back in school.

TheDfE guidance states they don’t expect Y10 and 12 to be back full time at this stage.

It’s not just the school environment they will need to look into but transport etc.

Maybe that’s the difference then - we’re both reading it with our school context in mind. Most of our pupils could walk to school and our kitchens have remained open for FSM pupils so some of the logistics will be easier. Not easy, but easier.

But the guidance says the face to face contact should supplement the remote learning. They don’t expect them to return full time or have full timetable as they want to minimise the number of students in school at one time.

I agree that the DFE guidance seems to imply that face to face contact is there to supplement home learning rather than replace it but my head seems to have interpreted it as all Y10s and 12s in. We are awaiting details but I'm annoyed that it's left open/with room for disagreement.

What about the guidelines that students need to stay with the same teacher all day every day, so if anyone becomes ill the whole group needs to self isolate? Does that only relate to Primaries?

That's a good point - but doesn't the bullet point underneath say something 'there may of course be adjustments to this in secondaries to allow for specialist teachers?

So many ifs, buts and exceptions...

Our HT said in briefing this morning that we will not be back full time. They are trying to schedule lessons where the Year 10 and Year 12 students can have one session with each teacher before the end of terms. So Year 10 Johnny may be in for English on Monday morning, followed by Maths on Tuesday morning, Drama on Wednesday morning etc. No full days Exams will be on-line.
