Could he try the harder work?

My son is 7 and in Yr3.
Posting in the staff room as I would appreciate opinions from teachers
With the online learning platform my son's school is using it is sometimes possible to see the work set for different ability children.
There was a particular piece of work which my son completed extremely easily. It was marked by his teacher & he got 100%. if I were to let him also try the harder work & then submit this, would it likely annoy the teacher?

Ask the teacher

Yep, that would be logical. Just interested in opinions

We've had to tell children that they don't HAVE to do all the levels set, some are very enthusiastic! I can't see how any teacher would complain if he completes the work set and the extension work, it's what we would see in class too!

Let him do the harder work! It might be because he is concentrating better in a quiet environment at home or because he has 1:1 support (if you are sitting with him) but it's not unusual for kids to be able to do harder things at home than they can in a busy class environment with 1 adult to 30+ kids in school.

I can't see the teacher being upset - if anything it will make a positive change for most teachers. A lot of my colleagues are setting work and getting nothing turned in! Some keenness to learn is always nice.

Also, I don't know about your DS's school, but we have been told to pitch low and set recap work so we are not adding stress into households.

I would have absolutely no issue with this - I’d be glad to see he was motivated to have a go at extra work and praise him for doing so.

But I’m mostly being sent pictures of children’s dinners so I’d be happy to see any work at all!

I’m setting a series of levels of work for my secondary classes. I would be delighted (and secretly hope) the children not usually set the harder work want to give it a try.

Great, a positive response. Thank you all very much. I'll get him to have a go at the harder work tomorrow.

I'd be thrilled 🤷‍♀️
