Advice for NQT interview/ surviving NQT year...eek!

Hi everyone,

Sorry if this is a cheeky question but I have an NQT interview online (am currently abroad) and have been asked to plan a unit on a specific topic. I do mid term plans at my international school but they are very basic with literally just the date and the objective, resources but nothing about teaching methodology.

Can anyone recommend me a template for a unit/MTP or just how long it should be? Confused

I am a bit nervous about going into the NQT year as a I took a few years out of the UK system after my PGCE and I want to go into it well prepared. I've read many posters saying they wouldn't encourage anyone to go into teaching at the moment but I want to give it my best shot..so any tips for surviving NQT year? Smile

Thanks to anyone who takes the time to read this and reply x

Hey

I'm a current NQT. For our mid-term plans at school, we have date, objective, resources, a brief summary of the lessons, and an overarching "intent/big picture" for each unit including the rationale for teaching it and links to "real life".

Honestly, my NQT year has been fine so far- although the current situation has obviously made things difficult. I've found it much easier than the PGCE! I am lucky to be in a supportive school, with a decent behaviour system and a supportive HoD, as well as lots of shared resources- I think finding the right school makes a huge difference, but obviously that's hard to judge, especially at the moment!

My PGCE year had a pretty huge drop out rate, but I don't think anyone's dropped out of the NQT year yet, whereas I know from a friend a few years ago, the PGCE drop out rate was lower, but the NQT drop out rate was much higher. I'm not sure if this means schools are doing more to support NQTs now, or if it's just chance that this has happened!

I'd say if you managed to survive your PGCE, the NQT will be fine, as long as you find a decent school!

Thank you for taking the time to reply! I’m glad your NQT year has gone well.

They actually withdrew the offer of an interview after deciding they weren’t going
To do online recruitment after all and I was gutted but I now have another interview asking for a completely different thing.

I also thought NQT year dropout was much lower.

There is a lot of stuff on TES to look at (of varying quality) which might help?

Good luck, hope it goes well!

I am sure that you know this already, but it is worth have a heavy duty look at the school website so you can work out what they are really keen on and their focus, motto, priorities etc.

Then you can tailor your replies accordingly to their priorities.

Just wanted to update and say that I got an interview for a job at a different school and got it. I will be starting my NQT year in September if all goes well.
