Performance Management Appraisals

Having just read a thread about keeping up with CPD, I got thinking about appraisal objectives.

How do we think these will be managed come the time to review the cycle?

Lots of the things my HoD set out which would make up evidence of success just won't be available, as it won't have happened. After the mid year reviews, if things weren't quite on track to be met yet (like results), will this been taken as the best evidence of a likely outcome?

Could the schools closure mean automatic pay progression or many automatically not meeting targets?

I do appraisals for my team. In my place of work it’s up to the member of staff to prove they have met or have made considerable effort to meet their targets. Obviously any results based targets cannot be used but I will be looking at coursework; SPOC results and markbooks.

I think some flexibility will be needed by those conducting appraisals. To be honest as a HOD of three subjects I know which members of my team would have had good results this year....

I think there will be some flexibility but also I would be looking for some creativity in how you managed the work for your students whilst they were off.
Were you innovative? supportive? collaborative etc. Did you still engage and challenge the children? How did you lead or develop your area in this challenging time. Did you sit back and do the same as last year. I think some teachers with imagination and drive will still shine even if the results may not be clear. Did you manage to get any of the children who may be difficult to engage, involved and enthusiastic?

I think you may need to be holistic and creative in gathering evidence perhaps?

How teachers approached lockdown should absolutely 100% not be used as a basis for performance management. That’s an awful suggestion.

I think union guidelines were that any appraisal process had to be halted.

This is a terrible, terrible (REALLY BLOODY TERRIBLE!) suggestion! It really, really isn't the fault of teachers if students aren't engaging with work set.

I'm pretty sure that unions will strongly be advising PM reviews to be halted, if they haven't done so already.

Cabbage I really think you need to read the information from the unions!

Unbelievable!

Will appraisal cycles continue as normal and will we move up the pay scale?
It will not be possible to operate appraisal arrangements during the school closure period. That means that all employers must accept there is only one fair way to proceed on pay progression. PRP is any case damaging and unjustified but clearly cannot operate if schools and colleges are closed. Staff must not be penalised when we recover from this crisis by having pay progression denied. The NEU therefore urges employers to agree now to set aside PRP this year (as some are already doing anyway) and agree that all eligible staff will receive pay progression. The NEU will support any member who is denied pay progression this year.
