Why are some schools setting extra GCSE work for Y11?

I don’t mean A-level prep, or providing ongoing revision in case of September resits.

I mean setting and marking work giving pupils the impression that it can be used towards improving predicted grades.

There’s no way that the exam boards will look at it is there? It would be totally unfair.

So why are they wasting kids and teachers’ time?

NCTDN- the guidance from the DfE says that the school’s previous results will be taken into account but they haven’t said how much weight that will be given. A school expecting their best ever results this year would be wise to be ready for some kids to sit the exams, in my opinion. Hopefully we’ll all have a bit more clarity in a few days and schools will have a chance to reassess over the Easter break. It may be that those of us who have carried on with teaching stop after the details come out or it could be that schools who have stopped teaching start again after Easter in light of whatever guidance we get.

Sabine I can just imagine Ds's face if I tell him Gcse study is back on again after Easter!!

It's interesting when they talk about previous results as Ds is at a state selective, so results are always high.

There are no performance tables so it would only be beneficial for the individual. Wonder how many schools will think like that?

I was expecting to have the best results for my 2 classes I have ever had. I can't see all 60 of them redoing it though. Maybe 5 of them if they had the choice.

I really hope that all schools would want the best possible grades for their students whether there are performance tables or not. I hadn’t thought of it like that.
Just like I would hope that teachers see the value of teaching the content on their curriculum whether or not there is an exam.
I think, as a profession, we are committed to the very best for our students regardless of whether appraisal or performance tables depend on it. I don’t think there will be many schools happy to settle for lower grades for their students just because there are no league tables this year.

Agree Sabine but there are a lot that would not be bothered as long as they will pass. They will have left school so it will be more up to the personal choice of the student and parents than the school.

I base this in the 60 characters in my classes in a school with a just about positive progress 8 score.

I think about 15 will take my subject at A level.
