Handing in notice during the lockdown

I am planning on leaving teaching at the end of the year and becoming a stay at home mum. This isn’t in relation to Covid19 and I was already planning on handing in my notice just before or just after Easter to allow my school time to appoint someone. I haven’t discussed it with anyone at school yet and I think it will come as a shock to SLT. When do you think would be the best time to do this in light of what is happening at the moment. Thank you

If you are intending to leave teaching, then I think you should go ahead and put your notice in. There will be plenty of supply teachers desperate for work when schools go back, so it won’t be hard for your school to find someone to fill the gap while they advertise for a permanent replacement.

Hi CrispsAndChoc! I have been thinking of doing the exact same thing. Like you, I have been thinking about it for a while, but wanted to wait until the end of the academic year. Did you decide what you're going to do? I have been Googling this for a few days and I can't find any information about this. All I can find are the usual resignation dates, with this one being the 31st of May. I'm really glad I came across your post.xSmile

It is going to be very hard for HTs to replace you. If you are certain that you are going to do it I think the honourable thing to do is tell them now so they’ve got as long as possible to plan.

I agree AppleKatie so I’m going to try and speak to my headteacher this week to tell them. I’d have preferred to do it in person but I’m not on the rota for a while (we’ve been isolating).

If you can, I would tell them what you plan now but offer to help out in the Autumn term if they havent beem able to replace you. I had 2 interviews lined up last week both postponed indefinitely, which is understandable but I assume they will need someone pretty quickly if we go back in Sept.
