Remote live teaching with my own children around.

Hello,

We are remote live teaching Yr 10 and Yr 12 and planning and uploading lessons for KS3. We are to continue to mark to policy and after Easter once Yr 11 and 13 would’ve had their study leave we are going to be assigned schemes of learning to prepare to upload. We are also have twice weekly form tutor periods, a dept meeting and a staff meeting all live via a stream.

I am really struggling with the live teaching as I have my own children (8 and 5) at home. So far it’s just been 1 lesson a day but Thursday I will have 2 x doubles so 4 hours where my children will need to entertain theirselves.

Is anyone else going through this? Any suggestions how to cope?

Your headteacher must really hate you (all).
Why on earth has this been agreed to?

WhyNotMe40 · 24/03/2020 18:50

Arent there safeguarding issues with livestreaming lessons? I also think your HT must help you.

WhyNotMe40 · 24/03/2020 18:51

Hate you, not help you Grin

bettyboo40 · 24/03/2020 19:16

We've been told absolutely no use of video. All work uploaded on to online platforms. We haven't even been given any expectations for marking either. No staff/dept meetings. No form tutor time. It seems crazy that you're expected to do all of that.

motherrunner · 24/03/2020 19:18

We have been told if we want to be paid then we do the work.

I’m not sure about safeguarding. School is very hot on protecting the pupils but staff aren’t a priority.

Have been on NEU website but they closed phone lines. We have no union presence at school (well there is a rep but they don’t do anything).

Talk to your union.

CheekyMango · 24/03/2020 19:22

Fucking hell that's a shit hole you work for! Definitely short of strike action worthy

motherrunner · 24/03/2020 19:22

I feel so sorry for my children. All their friends are doing a variety of activities but I have them devices and told them to leave me alone as I needed to teach. Why do other people’s children always take priority over our own?

@motherrunner I think I heard your child accidentally break your router....

motherrunner · 24/03/2020 19:25

@CheekyMango That is the first time I have smiled today! Unfortunately I think they would just send the technician around in A Hazmat suit to fix it.

MissBPotter · 24/03/2020 19:25

We also aren’t allowed to do any videoing or live lessons. How ridiculous and very difficult for you. I would look on the NEU website and quote the guidelines to try not to do it. Set some other work for the classes to do.

teaandajammydodger · 24/03/2020 19:26

This is awful.

motherrunner · 24/03/2020 19:27

Have looked on website @MissBPotter. Advises remote teaching is reasonable but should be “flexible” especially if a teacher is providing childcare for their own children, but as I stated above the union presence is ineffectual at my school and NEU have closed phone lines.

Thanks for suggestion though.

@motherrunner they won't be able to fix it if your kids have accidentally dowsed it with water and then "fell over" on your laptop causing it to be "crushed"....

CheekyMango · 24/03/2020 19:30

I'd just throw my router and laptop out of the window saying that the kids did it and then run it over but blame DH for that one...

motherrunner · 24/03/2020 19:30

😂

It’s a school laptop (all given one last week) so I think I may be flogged if that happened!

What kind of school OP? State? Academy? That’s surely not on (work in a school but not teacher, also a parent). Does management often threaten your jobs?!

CheekyMango · 24/03/2020 19:32

Id then promptly look for another job.... Well I wouldn't have stayed in that barmy place long enough for them to pull that kind of shit!

CheekyMango · 24/03/2020 19:32

Fucked em

CheekyMango · 24/03/2020 19:33

Fuck em that was meant to be Grin

motherrunner · 24/03/2020 19:41

State school.

No-one challenges the head as it’s a lovely, middle class school with very few behaviour problems so they hold that over our heads basically!

OP posts:
motherrunner · 24/03/2020 19:43

Have only been there 2 years but have been teaching 20 years.

On a thread below there is the NASUWT guidance, which states marking should not be done

Onceateacher · 24/03/2020 19:54

Give your rep the opportunity to help you.
In fact you can approach the head yourself quoting union guidelines. I'm not in your union but I'm guessing the lines are closed due to numbers calling - aren't they issuing bulletin updates to members or reading emails?
Union advice is meaningless until you use it to back you up.
What happens if your 5 year old runs naked through the room while you're trying to teach one of these doubles?
Honestly this makes me so angry you are willing to do what you can but this farce that we can do the same, but at home, while teaching our own children and juggling fire sticks is insane.
