So pissed off with irresponsible parents

So many students today were making really stupid plans: Sleepovers, house parties, meeting up in the park, you name it!

They were all quite baffled when I pointed out that we should all just stay home and not socialise. I can’t blame them, I am actually quite sad for them, especially my Y11s and Y13s. Parents, on the other hand, should act more responsibly, ffs!

DH is a teacher and just came in saying the exact same

GrumpyHoonMain · 20/03/2020 20:13

Unfortunately it will take the first healthy young person in ICU for a lot of kids / parents to take it seriously

Pentium85 · 20/03/2020 20:17

This was my main concern when it was voiced the schools would close.

Parents, unfortunately, cannot in the majority be trusted to stay at home with their children.

LaChatte · 20/03/2020 20:20

(In France) my pupils were saying the same last Friday. Over the past couple of days quite a few parents have been fined because of this. Pretty sure they're staying home now.

Suniscomingout · 20/03/2020 20:21

I don't think there's much point in closing schools unless they also say that children must stay at home (except for keyworkers' children).

rempy · 20/03/2020 20:23

Agree, my kids are having to go to school. My DD irate that we are "spoiling her fun" because friends meeting up in park, going into town. Seems that only the first word of the phrase social distancing is heard...

ParkheadParadise · 20/03/2020 20:28

On my dd's nursery page most of the parents are making plans to get together so the kids can have their graduation day.
I was bloody speechless.

HelenaJustina · 20/03/2020 20:31

The advice actually states that children should not be meeting/mixing socially. People are a) selfish and b) not taking this seriously

Comps83 · 20/03/2020 20:35

Local police have just posted photos of the booze they have confiscated from kids having parties . Beggars belief

Suniscomingout · 20/03/2020 21:56

This was the advice given at the press conference today ( from the Evening Standard):

"During a Downing Street briefing, Dr Harries said it was important to strike a balance between maintaining physical and mental wellbeing during the pandemic.

When asked about children going outside, she said: "For example keeping two metres apart, off for a bike ride together or something, that is absolutely fine.

"And in many ways, we would encourage that."

But she recommended that children should keep hold of their own bikes, wash their hands regularly and continue to catch coughs and sneezes in a tissue."

Suniscomingout · 20/03/2020 21:58

So I don' t think they're being consistent!

What’s pissed me off is the amount of parents merrily dropping their (primary) children off saying, “They’ve been coughing all night.”

puds11 · 21/03/2020 04:21

Yup in my parent what’s app group they had the children all hugging outside school. Asking if one of the boys who’s isolating due to asthma wanted to come down for a picture. It was unbelievably stupid.

IHateCoronavirus · 21/03/2020 04:25

Some parents are completely selfish and don’t want their own lives to be compromised/can’t say no to their child.
I’m pretty sure I have it. I am physically struggling and in so much pain. I am pretty sure I got it from school.

We had one parent refusing to pick up her coughing daughter because “she’s not infectious, she’s just not had her inhaler!” This was the same parent who refused to pick up her vommiting daughter before Christmas as “she isn’t being sick, it’s because she is coughing and has a nasal drip. Just tell her to swallow!” Needless to say the TA and I spent our own Christmas holidays with a vommiting bug! Angry

CallmeAngelina · 21/03/2020 16:24

One of my class' parents kept her child off for the first few days of this week, "unwell, with a cough." She then informed us she was sending her back for "the last "fun" day, so she can say goodbye to her friends!"
The school office told her quite categorically that was NOT happening and I we would not accept her in.

curlychocs · 22/03/2020 06:53

We will be on lock down soon. My MIL in Spain. They can only go food shopping or to work if it is essential. No walks, no meeting family, no beach. The pool is 4 metres away. It's closed. It will happen here.

BlessYourCottonSocks · 22/03/2020 20:04

We had several FURIOUS parents ranting at us on Friday about how we were ruining their child's life.

They were the parents that had rung in at the beginning of the week claiming that someone in the family had symptoms and they were all self isolating and child would not be in all week. Mostly Y10/Y11.

How enraged they were to turn up for the last day to sign shirts and hug their mates to find we stuck them straight in isolation and phoned home to say they had to be removed from school premises immediately. How dumb are some people? They then claimed that they were ok to stay because they'd lied earlier in the week, and no one was ill, and it wasn't fair to deprive them of their last day of school.

Tough shit. Some people are so entitled.

Everyexitisanentrance · 30/03/2020 00:06

@BlessYourCottonSocks - we did that. Our head has been really good over CV. A few parents have had their noises put out - he told one in the car park that he made the rules for people to follow and if the parent wanted to remove their child from the school roll he was happy for them to do so as we have a waiting list. He handled all the isolation queries and all the 'my child has to stay at school' demands. I hope he never leaves
