Lunch time meeting I had to attend?

I got an email this morning informing me that a meeting was to take place at lunch time and my attendance was mandatory - I am sure this isn’t right, or is it?!

OP posts:

At the moment I could see some emergency meetings being held re: coronavirus.

My school is having an emergency meeting in a lunchtime re Coronavirus, I can’t imagine anyone not wanting to be there Hmm

RainMinusBow · 13/03/2020 20:12

I was often requested to attend meetings and after-school events on my days off. I did complain but ended up being forced out (after 13 years teaching at same school).

Now working as a HLTA in a different school.

Everyone's lunch break is unpaid

So what? This is about a particular teacher being coerced into attending a meeting for which they are not liable.

At the moment I could see some emergency meetings being held re: coronavirus

Nothing that email can't handle. It's how it's done at my school.

noblegiraffe · 13/03/2020 21:16

The OP could go to a meeting for half an hour and still have a half an hour lunch break

She could but she can’t be directed to. If SLT want teachers to attend a meeting they can hold it in directed time at a more appropriate time like after school.

There’s usually a contingency in the directed time budget.

hallamoo · 13/03/2020 21:19

Echt - you made a point of saying that the lunch break for teachers is unpaid. I was saying that it is also unpaid for every other worker.

It doesn't stop people sometimes working through them. If it was a regular occurrence then it would be an issue, but as a one off, I can't see what the fuss is about. Plenty of people work through their unpaid break occasionally; nurses, Doctors, retail staff, waiters etc.

hallamoo · 13/03/2020 21:24

Well, after school is not necessarily directed time either. 1265 hours per year, that's roughly 6.5hrs a day directed time. School day is something like 8.30-3pm with half an hour lunch. That covers all the directed time.

FlamingoAndJohn · 13/03/2020 21:25

Can I point out that this is The Staffroom section and therefore about teaching and working in schools. If you don’t understand what it is like to work in a school then I suggest you don’t offer your opinions.

noblegiraffe · 13/03/2020 21:26

That covers all the directed time

Yeah, you don’t know what you’re talking about. Leave the teachers in peace.

hallamoo · 13/03/2020 21:31

Actually I do know what I'm talking about. I am aware this is the staff room and I do work in schools.

noblegiraffe · 13/03/2020 21:33

Then you will know that the directed time budget doesn’t just cover school hours Hmm

hallamoo · 13/03/2020 21:35

How does your 1265 hours divide by 195 days?

noblegiraffe · 13/03/2020 21:37

Bloody hell do you want a copy of the directed time budget? It covers a bit more than teaching time....plus there is a contingency.

hallamoo · 13/03/2020 21:41

I am aware of that, but 1265 hours is the directed time, which is what this thread is about. I realise that most teachers do more than that.

noblegiraffe · 13/03/2020 21:43
hallamoo · 13/03/2020 21:44

Blimey, you really are your own worst enemy sometimes...

FlamingoAndJohn · 13/03/2020 22:02

What exactly is your beef here, Hall?

noblegiraffe · 13/03/2020 22:52

Suspect they’ve been scheduling lunchtime meetings, not realising that every teacher hates them for it.

My school used to do lunchtime meetings, the unions made them stop.

BunnytheBee · 13/03/2020 22:57

I think @hallamoo is just expressing snd opinion and others seem a bit rude

hallamoo What other workers do is not the point. This is a teacher. On a teacher's thread. This about teachers' conditions of service.
