Hi,

I am looking at doing a level 5 DTLLS course as I would like to teach in the further education sector. I have a levels in psychology, history and sociology and I also have a degree in history. I have always wanted to go into teaching but was waiting for my kids to all be in full-time school before I start.

Will this be the best course option for me? As it currently seems ideal for me. My local college is running it and it only requires me to go into one evening class per week and the college will help me get some teaching hours.

I just wanted to know if anyone has done the course? And how did you find it? Also what did you do after the course? I just want to know what kind of prospects I will have after completing the course.

Thanks.

I thought DTLLS had been phased out?

Tbh I’d encourage you to get a level 7 postgraduate qualification- QTS or QTLS. I don’t know the sector very well but certainly vacancies at our local college insist on a teaching qualification equivalent to QTS, QTLS or BEd.

The qualification is called DET and is necessary if you want to teach long-term in FE. If possible, though, ask if they will convert the second year of your course to the level 6 ProfGCE and you can go on to do QTLLS after that, which would give you flexibility to work in sixth form colleges and schools as well.
