Calling in sick for just a cold?

I know it's just a cold, but I feel bloody awful with achy joints, headache, sinus pain, extreme sore throat etc.
I have also not been able to rest this weekend due to my own children, and DH has been away.
I never used to phone in ill unless I almost had a limb hanging off, but I don't love my job enough anymore to struggle in. But there is the hassle of setting cover work, having to reschedule practical activities, and of course the teacher guilt.
So... Would you?

In this school - yes. I love it there but you have to be on the ball 100%.
In previous schools - no.

If I had space to relax and rest today though, probably not.

WhyNotMe40 · 02/02/2020 08:49

Yes that's one aspect I hadn't considered - I think the kids would chew me up and spit me out if I wasn't on top of the game! I ha e some very tricky classes...

Yes I'd call in sick. Some colds I can work through, others wipe me out.

GlitteryGracie · 02/02/2020 08:50

I'd definitely call in sick. The thing with "just a cold" is that whilst many cold are nothing serious and you can power through, the odd one can be really serious and lay you low. Be kind to yourself.

Monstermummymum · 02/02/2020 08:52

If you have sinus pain then you could have a sinus infection which is worse than just a cold so don't go in.

Hassled · 02/02/2020 08:54

There's "just a cold" and then there's "a cold that makes you want to curl up and die". If you're feeling this rough there's no point being a martyr - a) you'll take longer to recover and b) you'll spread the infection around and your colleagues won't thank you for it.

Napmum · 02/02/2020 09:16

Sounds like you feel awful so no don't go in. It's not "just a cold" some colds are nothing but some lay you out for a while

WhyNotMe40 · 02/02/2020 09:28

This is definitely a "curl up and die" cold. In fact I've just had to lie down on the kitchen floor very suddenly for about 15 minutes ( while getting jumped on by oblivious 3 yo) as I came over all funny.
God knows what I will do with the kids this morning - they've already had 2 hours of screen time and are now climbing the walls. I'm not sure I feel safe to drive them anywhere!

If you don’t phone in sick and take care of yourself you won’t recover as quickly.

Start getting your cover work sorted now.

trinity0097 · 02/02/2020 18:10

That’s not ‘just a cold’ just ring up and say flu like symptoms and if you add in you have been to China in the last 14 days then you can have a fortnight off too! 😜

WhyNotMe40 · 02/02/2020 18:52

Text messages sent just got cover to sort.
I seem to be running a bit of a temperature as well now so I think I've made the correct decision

Gosh this feels very weird - my first sick day off work in a looong time!
I've managed to get the kids sorted for school and childcare, but had to keep having 10 minute lie downs. This is ridiculous for just a cold...

Just saw that NationalSickieDay is trending on Twitter. Unfortunate timing! Grin

Just realised I repeated what you said instead of replying - I'm really not with it! Will probably find that the cover work I set was a load of gibberish as well...
