Let school know?

Am a teacher. My eldest is nearly 16. Friend of year 8 girl next door today left him a note on the doorstep. Said note gives her name, Instagram ‘name’, phone number and email address and asks him to contact her because she likes him. As a parent of a geek who is utterly clueless when it comes to girls, it all feels hilarious. He is not interested but wanted to say ‘thanks but no thanks’ but have told him not to respond. Given that the age gap is enormous at this age and she has given her personal info to what is a stranger, I feel like I should be letting the school know. Is that the right approach or am I going overboard?

She's either 12 or 13. He's 15. It's not a massive age gap, tbh. I wouldn't like it if I was the girl's mum (understatement) but it's not got alarm bells all over it.

You are going completely overboard.

Thanks. It is more the giving of personal info to a random stranger that bothers me rather than the age gap. Although in not too many months time, he’ll be 6th form and she’ll be year 9. That feels worse?

I don’t know. I worry about girls daft enough to be courting the attention of strangers so overtly.

I read that as she was age 8 not year 8 at first and was going to say yes but no, she could be only 2-3 years younger than him. He knows not to do anything from what you have said so I'd leave it unless she makes a habit of it.

personal info to a random stranger

It's hardly a random stranger if you live next door.

If you don't know her Mum well enough to talk to her about it, then yes, let school know. They will ask someone in the pastoral office to have a chat with her about sharing personal information.

The girl who sent the message is not the next door neighbour.
