What next? Careers after teaching

Been teaching for 10 years. Currently an assistant head in a primary school.

For the first time in my career, I feel like I need a change but all I've ever known is teaching.

What other careers could be available to me? Feeling very narrow visioned in my options.

My brother is a teacher but he's had enough, so he's training to be a driving instructor.

Watching!

ridiculousridiculousness · 21/01/2020 20:04

@MrsGolightyly I wish I was a confident driver to do this. I have the patience and the teaching knowledge but I'm hopeless at knowing where I'm going Confused

Looking back, I wish I'd have left my options more open. Struggling to find an alternative career which means I don't need to take a huge pay cut. Surely it can't be and shouldn't be this difficult?

It really is. Ive been looking at £10 hour jobs.... and been overqualified 🤦‍♀️. Is retraining an option?

ridiculousridiculousness · 22/01/2020 21:03

@SquashedFlyBiscuit can't really afford the dramatic drop in pay that comes with retraining.

I was also an AHT, and resigned almost two years ago to spend more time with my children. I don't think I'll go back, but I've been having a look at what might be open to me when I'm ready to work again and the Civil Service seems to recruit lots of ex teachers. There are lots of very different departments-worth a look. Good luck!

I know a head teacher who became an estate agent

mammiesharkie · 23/01/2020 09:48

I left teaching and became a preschool manager, my role has now changed within the company and I organise staff training and deal with safeguarding x

You won’t be able to walk into a job on anywhere near the money you’re on without training.

Believe me-I’ve been looking for ages!

OP
What was your original degree?
Do you have a subject specialism?
Interests?

What parts of your job do you like?
Which parts do you dislike?

ridiculousridiculousness · 24/01/2020 20:24

@Careersytype my degree is in the social sciences but I've developed a specialism in English and Reading through my career.

I love working with the children and leading on school improvements but I can't take any more of the workplace political motivations getting in the way of what could be an amazing school. Staff dynamics are crippling me mentally and physically.

The grass isn't always greener I know but I'm just not sure this is what I should be doing for the rest of my life. Our wants and needs are always two different things.

I went back to uni this year to do a degree in Speech and Language Therapy - bloody loving it (apart from some aspects of the whole mature student thing and the more condescending "now remember you can't wear your ripped jeans and trainers to placement ladies" talks).

Careersytype · 24/01/2020 22:11

Project management?
Educational psychology? ( sometimes you can get grants to study)

Maybe give yourself a few months, and just look at loads of job adverts - just for research, and see what you like the looks of ( don't put any barriers up).

After awhile take stock of all the jobs, and see if there is a theme
