Writing a reference for an UCAS application

Anyone write references for UCAS ?

I've been asked to write one for someone I volunteer with, which I was very happy to do, and I've just been sent the request.
I've obviously looked at the guidance, and it seems very geared to pupils still at school.
The reason she has asked me is because it is a few years since she left school, so it presumably seemed more logical to ask someone who knows her now. I had presumed there would be questions for me to answer, rather than a 'blank page' expecting 4000 characters!

Can anyone guide me what might be useful to include?
She already has her A-levels so there is no 'predicting' needed from me.
It is to do Primary teaching if that makes a difference.

Many thanks

See if you can find a list online of the skills needed to be a good primary teacher then base your reference around real world examples of her meeting these skills.

Thank you AppleKatie.
I probably should have said my background is Primary teaching, so am in my comfort zone with skills needed - but a reference list is a good idea, thanks.

I write a lot of UCAS references - Y13 tutor. I agree with what has been said and think it is important to illustrate the skills mentioned with examples of when they have been shown. Doesn't have to be classroom based, for example DofE usually links to successful teamwork.

Thanks CrackedHeels2.
I've just never seen an UCAS reference (despite the fact I have my 3rd dc going through the process at the moment).

She is only applying to one place, and it is specifically to do Primary teaching (used to be a teaching training college before everywhere became a University), so I was originally going to link to qualities that would be good as a Primary teacher but when I read the guidelines, it threw me a bit as was all about suitability for 'academic study', and I can't really comment on that, plus, of course, she already has her A-levels, so they will be aware of what she achieved then.
I guess the guidelines are written for people writing references for 6th formers applying to all sorts of study at different Universities.

I just don't want to let her down, by missing anything crucial. Smile

I'm sure you'll write a great reference - you could mention that her A level grades confirm her suitability for academic study. Given they are already attained there cannot be an issue with that.

Depending on how long ago she finished sixth form I would also suggest she gets in touch with her head of sixth form. We write references for all Y13 students in the summer of Y12, if they decide not to apply at that point then we just keep the file in case decide to apply on the future. This might also be the case here. UCAS deadline is 15th January so she'll need to get on with her application!

I write references for students a lot, year 13 tutor. Although I also a couple of years back wrote one for a friend who had done some voluntary work at my school, she too was applying for teaching. As the advice above I tried to highlight the skills and give solid examples of how she had met them in her voluntary work. I also asked her what transferable skills she had based on her current job and wrote about her excellent time management, ability to lead a team, present in front of a group etc. I also wrote about her degree (as this was a PGCE she was applying for), in your case I would mention the A levels, and what they might bring to her experience from an academic viewpoint.
