Staff school dinners

Can staff at your school order a school dinner? How much do they pay, and what do they get?

We pay £1 for an amazing lunch - selection of hot options, cold meats and lovely salads.

RedElephants · 23/11/2019 18:48

Reading all the replies, how do staff dinners vary so much!!??
( new to all this)

RedElephants · 23/11/2019 18:48

Cost wise that is??

I wonder if some schools subsidise the staff meals? I know we don’t. Our children’s meals cost £2.30 and have been that price for two years. Staff meals were £3.00 last year, then went up to £3.20 in September then £3.25 in October.

PollyShelby · 23/11/2019 19:17

Ours are free, huge selection including fresh salad and fruit bar, hot and cold dishes and 4 different puddings.

I know we are lucky. Also get tea and toast at 4pm and home baked biscuits at break.

BettyCrockaShit · 23/11/2019 20:14

£3.50. Just the smell of it brings tears to my eyes, it's consistently dreadful.

missy111 · 23/11/2019 20:16

We can opt to do a duty (1 a week) and either get paid cash (in wages) which is slightly less than the other option which is to have the amount equal to the cost of a dinner (£2.80 I think) every day put on our catering account. Given we can get a variety of foods including sandwiches/crisps/cans etc as well as hot options most do this. We have a 6th form with separate catering hence the cans/crisps/chocolate etc!

In the schools I’ve worked in (primary) it’s always been free for staff but you have to eat with the children.

I’ve never had a school lunch because I value seasoning and they always look/ smell awful.

Be1atrix · 23/11/2019 22:58

Ours are free, bigger portions than the kids. We eat with the kids in the hall. I know we're lucky! At my last school they were an eye watering £4.

TheletterZ · 26/11/2019 20:35

Boarding school so free lunch. We all eat in together in the same hall but adults sit with adults.

If you have something on in the evening you can have tea as well.

Phineyj · 06/12/2019 21:44

£2.60 but we don't pay (private school). One course only, good choice and quality. If you want a drink that isn't water, a pudding or a snack, you do pay for those. I work 0.5 across four days so I get four lunches!

ReceptionTA · 06/12/2019 21:56

£3.20 for lunch, it's larger than a child's meal. The cook holds back on my chips because she doesn't want me to put on weight, apparently, whereas the very thin NQT gets his plate piled high.

I eat in the staff room because the hall is just too noisy for me at lunchtime.

Musmerian · 07/12/2019 16:59

We’re really lucky and get free lunches. Great food, choice if hot mains and jackets, soup, salad bar. Huge perk.

LolaSmiles · 07/12/2019 17:05

If we do a lunch duty then we are paid for duty and lunch is provided.
If we don't do a duty then we can pay £2.50 and have the same as the students (secondary) with reasonable portions.

SagelyNodding · 08/12/2019 09:58

Where I teach the price varies depending on how much you earn! TAs and support staff 2€60, secretaries 4€50 I think. Teachers pay 6€. Being France, it's a set 3 course hot lunch (salad type starter, meat/fish/eggs plus vegetables, real pudding), plus fruit, cheese and bread and a free coffee or tea. Usually it's pretty good! Christmas lunch is generally amazing Xmas Smile

Ricekrispie22 · 08/12/2019 10:41

Ours is the same as several other PPs: free if you do a duty but otherwise about £3. Yes, you get an adults portion of whatever the children are having, or you can request a jacket potato. The salad bar is unlimited though!

AnduinsGirl · 08/12/2019 13:44

£295 (as opposed to the kids' price of £1.50.) Biiiiig portion including unlimited salad, plus a dessert. Whoever's in charge of the school that day (HT, DHT or AHT) gets a meal for free.
