Too expensive to get a new job?

Handed my notice in at half term & this is the first post I've applied for. Really liked the school.
Spent ages on my letter & submitted my application last week. Had an email today which stated that they needed to withdraw the post due to to 'unforeseen circumstances'
Wondering if this is actually code for 'no one we really want to interview'
I'm UPS & worried it's going to put people off Sad
Sorry, slightly pointless post but feel better for venting!

There are jobs still around for UPS although a few people I know have had to take a lower pay rate. I can only comment about London and I know there are jobs around and opportunities for UPS roles. I’m sure you’ll find something great soon.

I wouldn’t overthink it. Most people need to apply for a number of jobs/go to a few interviews. Budgets are tight but any head would want some experienced teachers too rather than just a bunch of NQTs.

WillowB · 14/11/2019 20:40

Thanks, yes I'm prob massively overthinking it.
I used to be an AHT so I knew I could meet the person spec & as it's an LA job this would have meant an interview so thought this sounded like a sneaky way of getting around not having to interview.
Oh well, onwards & upwards!

No UPS jobs round here-everything seems to be ‘NQTs welcome’ which means ‘don’t apply unless you are one!’

If heads have got no money in the budget, why would they appoint a UPS teacher when they can have two NQTs?!

WillowB · 15/11/2019 10:52

To be honest I'd be quite happy to be paid M6. Not precious about my UPS but I think M6 would still be pushing it.
Well in a couple of years they're going to be putting NQTs starting salaries up. Might make them slightly less attractive

Why do they need UPS teachers? Somebody needs to support the NQT's, some schools appreciate having experienced teachers who don't need hand holding, good schools will actively search for a balance.
FWIW I moved a couple of years ago on UPS3. I had been invited to have a look around and had an informal chat with the head (refusing to be drawn on my reasons for leaving my then post), afterwards I emailed to say how much I liked the school but would not be able to take a pay cut. The ball was in their court. They invited me to interview and it was very thorough - observed lesson, planning task, presentation ... they offered me the job on UPS3.
Still UPS3 now and will probably be on it for the rest of my career now as I have no aspirations to go into management. I wish schools could still have AST's. Oh well. It's possible to move but I would be upfront from the off and take the opportunity to show them what you could offer.

I was ups... I have dropped to M6 to get a part time job in a good school..tbh what I have lost in pay I have gained in mental health..the difference when on 0.5 pay wise doesn't work out as wildly different,

WillowB · 15/11/2019 23:28

@clareykb yes I thought the same. Think it works out as £30 per month which my current school think entitles them to the moon on a stick or at least 5 assemblies, leading a core subject & 3 extra playground duties this half term Hmm

Hmmm, until a new head joins who decides you’re a bit too expensive and they can get rid of you with a few inadequate observations and finding fault in some of your marking/assessment/feedback/CPD and you’re given the choice of capability or going then and there with an agreed bland reference.

Sadly, I have seen it happen too many times to teachers in their 50s.

AriadneCrete · 17/11/2019 19:49

I handed in my notice at half term too. I’m on UPS and had the same fears. I’ve only been in my current school since September and I was also worried about how that “looked.”

I don’t know where you are, but if you’re in London you don’t need to be worried at all. There are plenty of schools willing to offer UPS. Good luck!
