Medical room/first aid question

I might apply for a job in a local secondary school to be coordinator in a medical room (it's a large secondary school) and I would just like to know what level of First Aid is normally required to work in a medical room in a secondary school. I used to have paediatric first aid training, but that wouldn't be necessary? If I don't get this job, I might pay for first aid training but I am not sure which training to go for. TIA for any knowledge as to which type of first aid training would be required for this kind of role.

Hi, I'm applying for a role in a secondary school. They are calling it a welfare officer which is a cat h all for medical, pastoral and risk assessment. They are asking for first aid at work qualification. I already hold this which will hopefully help my application but it did say as long as you get the qualification quickly it's not a problem to not have it. Hope that helps and let me know how you get on so I know what to do!

I spoke to the school and it's also 'first aid at work' qualification but it will be provided. Good luck (to both of us)!

I have just left this type of position after 3 years in a large secondary school.
The role is very much pastoral and although you do have to have first aid the actual role does not involve that much .
It is mainly dealing with students trying to get out of class for the slightest reason i.e. wanting a drink/plaster .
The job is very rewarding though -I think I just got burnt out dealing with the students behaviour and trying to keep the same ones in school all the time.
The best bit is actually dealing with long term medical issues and the students do genuinely see you as their school mum who can solve every problem!!!

Thank you for that! Really helpful. I'm also a youth worker who does 121 work and group work for health and well-being so the role would suit me well. Application is in. I have to call the school as they have two different dates for closing date of applications (second one is less than a months notice but it doesn't affect my current role so want to reiterate it) fingers crossed

Good luck . Pop back and let us know !

Im surprised that's a full time role actually.

All schools I've worked in have had a team of student admin staff who covered first aid, attendance, letters, detention admin, SEND admin etc.

I agree with other posters, you'll be mainly spotting trends for those who are trying to skive.

Application is in and closing date has passed. I did call the school as they had two different closing dates and didn't confirm that they had received the application. They said I should be hearing by the end of the week for interviews so fingers crossed for tomorrow xxxx.

Hi all, slowly losing hope I'm getting an interview as it slowly heads to close of business today. Such a shame as I would have been great at the role. But with them only advertising the position for just under a week I'm assuming they already had someone in mind and have just advertised it for fairness. Annoying but oh well. Nothing in my local area for the same or similar role so will look at applying for lunchtime helper as then I've got more school experience for next time a job like this opens again. Sorry I didn't have good news.

nonnygirl · 15/11/2019 18:43

I would lose hope yet . Things can go quite slow sometimes in school regarding recruitment so don’t give up yet !

lpchill · 15/11/2019 23:49

Ah thanks. Still haven't heard anything. Husband said the same that they contact next week but just don't want to have to worry about it over the weekend. Everything crossed for next week.

Hi all, got a phone call off the school. Got an interview this Friday morning!!!! Any tips or advice for the interview please?

nonnygirl · 18/11/2019 15:55

Well done !
I was asked a safeguarding question ie anything you have been involved in/ what would you do if someone presented to you with a safeguarding issue .
Also I had to do an example careplan so it may be as well to look at the main ones - asthma ,epilepsy , anaphylaxis ( mainly nut allergies in a school) .
I was also asked about prioritising emergencies - what would you do if you were dealing with one issue but were then asked to deal with another issue .
Let me know if I can help with anything else!

QueenBlueberries · 18/11/2019 17:20

I was also asked about what I would do if a child told me they were being bullied.

Hi everyone. Final update. Don't the interview. Went really well. Was one other person but they are a trained nurse. When the school called to say I wasn't successful they said they wanted a more medical person even though I held the qualification. They did say they would really love me in a pastoral role so they asked me to apply if and when one of those comes up. Bit disappointed as it seems bit like a waste of time. My youth group kids are sad for me and said I would have been great and the school lost out on me. Bless them. Thanks all for your support and advice

My dd spent many hours in the medical room, every week! They main skills she needed was a cup of tea, a biscuit, a listening ear and a calming voice
