Going part time

Hi all. I'm currently on maternity leave with my first, and expecting to go back to work at the beginning of April. I'm hoping to be able to go back part time when I return - the school generally is good at allowing for this so fingers crossed! My question is when would be the best time to ask; sooner or later? And any tips on how to word the email? Thanks, and keep looking forward to half term, it's close now!

Sooner. You don’t want them to reject the application on the grounds that they can’t hire anyone to cover the hours you won’t be working due to not enough notice.

Good point! I don't think they've hired a maternity cover so hopefully it will be seen as me being an extra teacher anyway if that makes sense?

A further, probably stupid question, but would I contact the headteacher directly?

The TES guide here is very helpful:

You could sound your head out informally about the prospect before putting the official request in.

Have an informal chat with the HT first.

You can only ask in writing once in a year so if it's a no it's difficult to come back from.

Check your school policy and take it from there.

If they say no then challenge it with the help of your trade union.

Sooner would be my advice here. It also gives you best pick of the days if your school has some flexibility.
