Anyone have info. on recommended ratio of taught hours to prep/marking time?

As above. Where could I look for guidelines on taught hours to prep/marking hours? I am on 3 days per week. Teach 16.5 hours and have 1.5 hours for prep and marking. (I'm leaving the job!)

Meant to say, this is FE.

I'm not sure for FE, but in schools it's 10% PPA.

astuz · 06/10/2019 13:52

It's 10% of the hours you teach. So, 10% of 16.5, means you are entitled to 1.65 hours per week. As pp have said though, that's only for schools, might not apply to FE.

Ofthread · 06/10/2019 14:53

Ok, bit shocked - but I suppose it's not far off. Not sure how I was meant to do prep and marking in 1.5 hrs in the job!

LolaSmiles · 06/10/2019 15:16

Standard in schools is 22 hours of lessons (plus form time) and 3 hours PPA, if school rounds up.

Nobody gets everything done in PPA time.

NotGreenNotKeen · 06/10/2019 15:18

You do it in your own time like everybody else?

Ofthread · 06/10/2019 15:18

Yes, but the pay is lower in FE.

OP posts:
NotGreenNotKeen · 06/10/2019 15:19

That's why we get holidays.... remember...it's not just hours in the institution!!!

Ofthread · 06/10/2019 15:19

So it kind of makes the job not worth it...

OP posts:
Ofthread · 06/10/2019 15:20

Also, we don't get the holidays...

OP posts:
LolaSmiles · 06/10/2019 15:25

Aren't FE holidays longer though?

My friends in FE finish when the a level exams are and those of us in schools are in until July. It may be different for vocational subjects. They also said that there's different pay based on whether people are qualified teachers Vs assessors for vocational subjects etc too.

Ofthread · 06/10/2019 15:32

No, teaching right up until July. The management also cram meetings into the weeks after that. It may just be that I was at a shite place, but these, amongst other things, are what led me to resign. They don't seem to employ anyone full-time. They fill the days with teaching, and they then expect you to use days when you aren't being paid to work for them. Not surprisingly, I can't do that.

OP posts:
NotGreenNotKeen · 06/10/2019 15:37

Your holidays are longer..!!!!!!! We teach right up until practically August... 20th July for e.g....

NotGreenNotKeen · 06/10/2019 15:38

I think you've got unrealistic expectations of what it takes to do the job sorry.

LolaSmiles · 06/10/2019 15:45

Fair enough.
I've had friends in FE who've been done after the exams and others who have such substantial gained time they've managed to examine for the boards whilst sat at work.

In terms of your prep time, 10% is totally in line with the norms in teaching though. I've not known anyone expect to be able to plan and mark in their 10% PPA. Anyone expecting more than that has unrealistic expectations I'm afraid.

mizu · 06/10/2019 15:52

FE here - 15 years and f/t for last 3 years teaching and co ordinating 2 departments. 24 years teaching in total.

Can confirm that full time teachers in my college do 24 hours teaching a week. Pay full time is around £26,000 a year. That's not a starting salary btw. That's a salary of a teacher over 20 years in the job.

Holidays are 37 days a year, pretty good but not school teacher good.

I love it as I love my subject and have a great team and it's a local job. People come and go a lot generally though as pay is so low.

mizu · 06/10/2019 15:54

Finish around the week before schools but have to be back at work around August 20th. Most teachers are in work for a week or so during the summer.

LolaSmiles · 06/10/2019 16:02

That's lower holidays than some in our area.

Is there a difference between a level teaching in FE and vocational?

Ofthread · 06/10/2019 16:04

Yes, I was also back in mid-August.

I don't think the conditions are reasonable, and that's why I'm leaving. If you are all happy with it, that's fine, I'm not criticising you. But, 'Everyone else does it' is not a valid argument for the conditions being acceptable. It's the sort of argument management would use to justify their exploitation of the staff. For me, the expectations and responsibility of the role do not match the pay and conditions.

When does your directed time run until?
Ours is minimum half an hour after the kids go home so that adds an additional chunk of time for prep on days there's no meetings or after school clubs.

Ofthread · 06/10/2019 16:18

Yes, we get a half hour at the end of the day, but I find this is taken up with the other admin (of which there is tons).

We are in work at the college I work at 8:30-5. Most of us do an evening until 9pm so can be at work 8:30am - 9 pm and then teaching again all day the next day. This does mean we can leave earlier on day to get hours worked back.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 06/10/2019 20:38

I'm full time primary. I've worked since before PPA came in, so back then you had to do absolutely everything after school or at lunch time. And we didn't have computers etc to make things easier. (Old gimmer alert - I'm 45!)

Now, I have PPA for one afternoon. Which I use to just plan and prep as much as possible. Then everything else - and there's a lot more admin than there ever used to be - gets done before work (I get there by 8 so have a half hour there), or at lunchtime, or between 3.20 and 5pm.

Hmm, old gimmer here too, but I personally much preferred the pre PPA days as the paperwork expectation was ok then. The minute PPA came in, everything seemed to triple!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 06/10/2019 21:20

Absolutely! So much less was expected then.
