Exam marking/maternity

Does anyone know if there’s a problem doing exam marking while on maternity leave?

It didn’t occur to me that there would be issues but I just saw another thread that suggested it could stop your mat pay. I tried to decipher a legal website and gave up.

I’m sure it’s quite a common thing to do: anyone know for sure?

I know lots of people who've done it but I'm not sure you're really meant to. If you were self-employed it would be fine as far as I understand it but I think most exam boards now act as your employer. It might be worth emailing AQA or whoever you are thinking of marking for, they must've come across this issue already.

I think it's one of those things where no o E actually checks.

I think technically you're not supposed to but I've done it (without knowing I wasn't supposed to!). No one picked up on it anywhere.

Thanks. I saw a suggestion somewhere that it could stop your mat pay and worried...

My school wouldn't let me as they said it counted as a part time job. My manager did though and had no issues.

Do you think it would’ve been fine if you’d not “asked”?

It will affect your maternity pay so you'd need to check first

I read through a 2019 AQA contract and it says that they are not your employer and you are a contractor so although they pay as PAYE it counts as self employed.

This is a quote from the contract “
1.2. The Contractor is not the employee or agent of AQA and has no authority to represent and must not claim to represent or enter into any commitments on behalf of AQA in any respect.
1.3. Nothing in this Agreement is intended to make nor shall it make AQA the employer of the Contractor. The Contractor is classified as self-employed and the Contractor must not claim that they are an employee, director or officer of AQA.“

Definitely don't "ask"! Just get on with it.

Just do it. We won't tell

I wouldn’t worry about the second job aspect at all, exam boards are quite clear that it isn’t a job.
However, as a senior on both papers for my subject at GCSE please be careful you can complete the marking before saying yes.
Every year I / my teams have to pick up the shortfall for new markers, often on mat leave, who mark a few easy questions then sack it off.

AQA pay you through PAYE so HMRC would know about it, which could stop statutory maternity pay. Probably best to ring AQA and find out.

I looked into this a couple of years ago. Yes your are classed as self-employed whilst exam marking, certainly for AQA so it won't affect your mat pay as long as you clear it with your school. My school were totally fine with it.
