A Level Sociology

Does anyone teach A Level Sociology on here? I am investigating the best exam board to use. I can see on Amazon that most of the textbooks are AQA, which is to be expected but I am a bit wary of AQA on the whole. I like working with Eduqas, and the OCR spec looks quite good. On the whole, they all look really similar.

Any thoughts welcome!

Bumping, lest anyone is feeling helpful today!

I don't teach Sociology, but have experience of the different boards for English. AQA would be my last choice and Edexcel first. I teach Eduqas now and they're OK.

There is a Sociology teachers' support group on Facebook. I joined when I thought I was going to be teaching some Sociology. I would try them there.

I teach English too and concur re AQA! I'll hunt down the Facebook group. Thank you.

We are aqa sociology. Generally find it pretty standard to teach and the kids are able to access it well.

Results are always good for us too without a particularly strong cohort.

Thank you. I suspect,as in everything, AQA has a monopoly?

AQA has a monopoly? Really? In maths, everyone is all about Edexcel.

Piggywaspushed · 23/09/2019 11:28

Yes, I think maths is the exception that proves the rule a bit!

We teach AQA, however I believe OCR is a good alternative. Do you offer GCSE Sociology; it is vey similar to the A level so you might want to ensure different boards if that is the case.

Piggywaspushed · 26/09/2019 21:33

No, no GCSE. I did notice that looking through some textbooks online, though!

I find the AQA spec focuses more on the research methods which is not so much my knowledge base so will probably choose OCR.

We use AQA for GCSE and OCR for A level Sociology. We chose them because the topics are far more appealing, and more reflective of university level sociology. I love the OCR A level!

SabineSchmetterling · 27/09/2019 06:34

I don’t teach Sociology but our school does AQA for Sociology A Level (and the sciences, English, History and Psychology). We do Edexcel for languages, maths and geography and OCR for Philosophy and Ethics.

LadyLooLaa · 27/09/2019 06:53

I teach OCR sociology. I originally chose it because it had better resources for getting started (eg a suggested scheme of work). I love it. I don't have much know much about the AQA course but i really like that the OCR course goes right up to dye with the glaoblisation and digital social world course. The students seem to really enjoy it and results are very good (at the moment - fingers crossed). There is a Facebook group that might be worth joining if you want to ask more questions.

LadyLooLaa · 27/09/2019 06:53

The Fb group is also pretty good for resources etc

Piggywaspushed · 27/09/2019 06:56

Thanks all. The FB group appeals :I have this for Eduqas for my other subject and lack of this kind of support was the reason I abandoned OCR!

There is a big chunk of one of the papers that is about research methods but it really isn’t difficult. If you direct message me your email (not sure if this is allowed - also I’ve not done it before so I don’t really know how to access messages - I’m sure I could work it out) I’m happy send you some bits and pieces to get you started.
Honestly teaching sociology is the happiest part of my teaching load.

Piggywaspushed · 27/09/2019 16:53

That's a lovely offer . I may just do that! Thank you!

I used to teach A level Comms so most of it is in my comfort zone . The research stuff, not so much...

AQA here. Wasn't involved in the decision-making. It's fine, wouldn't say it's particularly challenging as A levels go though, but I only have limited experience.
