How many observations in a day?

How many observations/ monitoring drop ins / learning walks is it reasonable to have in a day. I'm in an RI school and I feel like I constantly have people in my class Sad

Been there but more than once a day is poor planning on part of SLT surely?

Oh but - once we got through that bit, I found I didn’t care if people were watching as I’d got so used to it. So there’s a good side...

3 hours in a year isn’t it?

Piggywaspushed · 18/09/2019 19:00

I thought it had gone down to 2...

Would you think observation week straight after OFSTED was unreasonable?
Does OFSTED count as observation?

SabineSchmetterling · 18/09/2019 19:23

We had Ofsted in September once. The next round of observations were cancelled. We only have one formal observation a year and one learning walk so we just had the learning walk that year. I’m fairly Shock at the idea of multiple observations per day.

We don't have formal observations anymore they were scrapped a few years ago in favour of a couple of learning walks at an unspecified time within a set week so you had notice. Don't think I had a single observation last year Grin head has realised it's pointless! They learn everything they need by looking at books which still only happens a few times a year. But then again I'm in a 'good school's but surely leaders just realise that the kind of scrutiny your describing is counterproductive or do they really just not trust their teachers?!

They learn everything they need by looking at books

I'd heavily dispute that. Books are not a proxy for what students have learnt or how effective the teacher is.

I think schools should have an open door culture where SLT are aware of the type of lesson they should expect when they walk through your door. I no longer do anything extra for observations, I just teach a bog standard lesson and get good feedback every time.

Formal observation time is limited, I think 3 hours per year.
